I own a small motorcycle shop. I do custom work, repair work, custom building etc. I keep hearing about the new 2006 epa regulations and how stringent it is going to be on the motorcycle industry. Would anybody here be in the know with the EPA or these laws and be able to share some insight on them? I hear you will only be able to own one non-compliant bike with a 2006 or newer title, that you will have to own such motorcycle for 5years before being able to sell it, the costs for getting a bike epa approved are astronimical etc.

I've heard sketchy stories about how tough these will be on custom builders. I'm sure someone will come along who knows more.

Try this link http://www.abatecmro.org/epa_regulations.htm

It's supposed to explain the new regs to laymen.

Here's the link for EPA's rules. It's looks like they are soliciting comments on the proposed rules now. So... They suck.

Well it doesn't look as bad as I had expected after reading the links posted. It is going to be a pain and kind of useless since motorcycles are tuned very well and their enviromental impact is minimal compared to things like cows farting(I keep reading stories about this and lauging). This seems to be another one of those special interest/lobbyist things that will most likely be short lived, at least I hope.

I didn't read where you mentioned where you are. The state is the worst IMO.

Here in CA I think they are trying to pass law that would make California residents have to have mufflers sticking out of our own rear ends, so I am sure the motorcycle issue would be a substantial issue.

Yeah, they don't care where California homosexual men put their private parts, but if you dare fart in California, then you are a criminal of the worst kind.

Laws are made to be broken. The more people ignore them, the faster they fade into obscurity.

Nothing is really final, let's see where the money flows first. This is going to raise the prices of Motorcycles of all types to start with, plus inspecting them is going to cost more, maintenance is going to cost more. I just don't see this as being viable when there is such a big push for fuel efficiency and the vehicles they are going after get 30plus miles a gallon on highway easily.

"otorcycles are tuned very well and their enviromental impact is minimal "

They're mentioning FI and air injection. THere effect now is zilch. They're calling for 12g CO/km and 1g HC/km. There's 1.6 mi/km. Do you measure emmisions now during tuning? Do you have any numbers?

I'm afraid of what the new laws are going to be. Between the noise and emissions rules, it's going to get ugly! Way back in 1997, when I bought my new Ducati 900 SS, it was geared way too high, and it was jetted so lean that it was dangerous! I had to rev it to 3000 RPM in order to start out, otherwise it would backfire through the carbs and stall!

They've got all stages of rulemaking posted. I'm looking at the final docs. THe air regs are final. Owner inspection depends on the Regional Air Quality Board.

From the final doc.

"Health and Environmental Benefits Nationwide, highway motorcycles are significant contributors to mobilesource air pollution and produce more harmful emissions per mile than a car or even a large SUV. Motorcycles currently account for 0.6 percent of mobile-source hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, 0.1 percent of mobilesource oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions, and less than 0.1 percent of mobile-source particulate matter (PM) emissions. The highway motorcycle standards will reduce the combined emissions of HC and NOx in the exhaust by 50 percent. Without these further regulations, highway motorcycles would account for 2.2 percent of mobile source HC and 0.3 percent of mobile source NOx by 2020."

" it would backfire through the carbs and stall!"

I hate that factory condition. You lean through a slow turn at an intersection, then it does that. The next thing you're doing is picking the bike off the ground. LOL!

My first choice spot to tear down the building and put in a parking lot is The UN Building in New York City. My second choice is the EPA Building in Washington D.C.
