New York Times chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr., who famously got punched in the eye by a bicycle messenger in 2002, gets another shiner in the new issue of The New Yorker. In a must-read profile for media soothsayers, writer Ken Auletta raises the question of whether Pinch Sulzberger can survive journalistic embarrassments and shrinking profits.
Auletta quotes a "family friend" asking, "Is Arthur going to get fired?" Though Auletta notes that The Times remains arguably "the world's finest newspaper," and the only one that generates more than $1 billion a year in advertising, he contends: "Within the newsroom, there is a sense of rudderlessness and a fear that a series of business misjudgments may so weaken the company's finances that the brilliance of The Times will be at serious risk."
Sulzberger's family has controlled the Gray Lady since 1896.

According to Auletta, Sulzberger "seems to lack the weighty seriousness of his predecessors." His stabs at humor "sometimes strike people as immature or sarcastic."
Among several examples was an editorial lunch with Secretary of State Condi Rice where Sulzberger kept alluding to the fact that a bomb-sniffing dog had thrown up on the carpet. "Thank you for sharing that," said Rice, as "some of the reporters present cringed."

LOL!
Reminds me of an Onion headline: "NEW YORKER UNREAD IN 4 BOROUGHS."
bump
Typical liberal - if it weren't for sex, bodily functions and personal attacks on Republicans and Christians, they'd have nothing to laugh about.

Very well put!
"Auletta notes that The Times remains arguably "the world's finest newspaper..."
The Times remains arguably the world's most boring newspaper. The world's finest? My vote goes to the Wall Street Journal.
Liberals eat their young. Here's another example...
A Richard Pryor legacy...hope Horrywood is proud.
I posted a few days ago that the PUBLIC display of eating their young is rare, if non-existent most of the time.
Since when can you remember a public protest of a lib by libs....Hillarie vs the peaceniks......rare indeed in the public forum.
Well...Little snot-nosed Tommy did bitch over the weekend that Kerry didn't work South Dakota hard enough.
The whole world knows Pinch has pi$$ed away the Times' mantle as the "newspaper of record". The whole world knows that the Gay Lady is Democratic Party propaganda wrapped around high-end lifestyle copy/advertising.
Yet the legacy holders of inherited stock, who truly control the management of the firm, are still so confortable with their cash flows, that the ruin of the institution is only now seeping onto their collective radar.
Yep, it seems the cat is out of the bag....libs are losing on their own polls, MSM outlets laying people off, Dingy Harry saying Dean doesn't make policy, bad election '06 possibilities....Looks like a major implosion in the works.
Would not be surprised in an all out revolt, formation of a New Demo Party if they can't wrestle power from extreme left.
Our job? KEEP UP THE PRESSURE!
The old media still hasn't figured out how to compete in a world absent their monopoly. No longer can they shape public opinion as THE NYTimes sees fit. This fallen god of the old media has earned its place in Hades.
Well said...however, their big problem is that they confuse a commercial enterprise with an institution. The NYT and its clones are a business....provide a faulty product, pay the price.
Never trust a Lib with running a company....thats why so many are pols, musicians, artists, comedians, actors (solo stuff works best for them)....they usually fail at running a business. (some exceptions noted)
What disappoints me is to think how long these leftists had a free ride. Can't blame them, it was us....BUT until the Internet came along, there was no forum for alternative information....
Thanks Al Gore!!!!!!
And, lest we forget ...
* Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger was a long-haired, 1960s radical who was quoted saying that American servicemen in Vietnam deserved to die because they were in someone else's country.
* His own father, who was NYT publisher at the time, considered his son's words treasonous.
* Ann Coulter has been roasting this d-ckhead for years, wondering why his SAT scores, and IQ, are so low that he was the first Sulzberger to not get admitted to either Columbia or Harvard.
Excellent analysis, and spot on. Couldn't have said it any better.
I'm shocked these colleges didn't offer him a free ride...guess they knew he had a golden family parachute.
"My vote goes to the Wall Street Journal."
