Gen. Tommy Franks Reminds Americans Why We Are Fighting the War on Terror
Human Events ^ | December 2, 2005 | Robert Bluey

Retired four-star Gen. Tommy Franks gave a rousing address Thursday night in support of the War on Terror, raising speculation about a possible political career in the near future or at least a more visible role in defense of President Bush.

Franks, who oversaw military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq as head of U.S. Central Command, was honored by retired Lt. Col. Oliver North’s Freedom Alliance with its 2005 Defender of Freedom Award.

“We believe that in this War on Terror we can fight them over there or we can fight them over here,” Franks told the group of Freedom Alliance supporters. “People ask me all the time, what good has come since 9-11-01? I don’t know, the Afghans are working hard, the Iraqis are working hard. Nobody said it was going to be easy. And there has not been another attack on American soil.”

Franks, an ardent supporter of Bush, opened his speech with jokes about a future in Washington—which fueled talk among attendees that he could be asked to take a job in the Bush Administration or run for political office....

Hmm, I'd guess General Franks would be a fairly conservative nationalist who would believe in protecting the borders and the Constitution.

That would be very refreshing.

Anyone have insight as to his posititons?

What a great debate: Moonbat General Wesley Clarke vs. American Patriot General Tommy Franks!

Moonbat General Wesley Clarke vs. American Patriot General Tommy Franks!

Clarke = mincemeat.

Think back to Franks' first press conference from Baghdad.  Someone asked a question impugning his integrity and truthfulness.  With a cold, deliberate warning not even to breathe a breath of stale air on his honesty and character, the press corps cowered into tail tucked submission.

Imagine the perfumed princely politician Clarke eyeball to eyeball with the down home my-word-is-my-bond Franks.  Oh, to see that day . . . !

I thought Tommy retired from the military at an odd time.

How about President Franks???

The record of American history is that the voters periodically turn to generals for a respite from the hard core politicos.

Franks appeared on Fox News in a suit and tie along with Ollie North..... Now there's a ticket.

Keep in mind Franks is the conquorer if Baghdad. How many generals in world history can say that? He's the real thing.

The '08 election could be the time.

Not only is he the Real Deal, he's rather modest as well. One evening in 2003 I ate a late supper just a few chairs away from him in a sparsely populated dining faility in Qatar. This was a base where a 'mere' one-star flag officer had little or no status and I witnessed full bird officers carrying meal trays for higher ups.

But even in this environment, General Franks came in without an entourage, carried his own tray, greeted all of us around him, ate, then removed his own dishes from the table.

This may seem silly, but as I said earlier, lesser ranking officers routinely paraded with their 'possies' and enjoyed the perks of being served. Franks didn't and neither did his main spokesman, General Brooks.

Contrast that to another 08 wannabee, Romney Maximus, who never even opens a door, as he struts around with his heavily armed Praetorian Guard to keep him from the common muck.

That after having all but abolished the second amendment in gay Assachusetts

I do believe that dog would hunt. It would be interesting to see what the dumbcrats would do to try and smear his name....which I doubt the American people would buy into. If he came out strong on the defense of our borders I don't see how he could lose.

For sure that dumbass Mike Wallace couldn't ask him what prepared him to be President of the most powerful country on earth...wait...That wouldn't stop that old fool!!

General Franks probably thinks he is 'somewhat' responsible for the "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" moment in history BECAUSE it is at HIS request that the POTUS pronounce the fateful message in order to inspire and praise the troops after the toppling of Saddam's regime.

That being said I have said many times that there were TWO things the nation wanted after 911. Both of which, if accomplished, would have been considered absolute VICTORY.

First that we pursue and KILL those responsible for bringing down the towers and Secondly, to PREVENT any FUTURE attacks on our soil.

The FIRST is being successfully pursued and the SECOND has been accomplished up to this moment.

Unfortunately the American people are unrealistic and evidently wanted both accomplished with NO BLOODSHED or sacrifice!!

I'll bet most people don't know that Franks about flunked out of college and went into the Army as a raw recruit. Then he got his head screwed on tight and went on to OTC and then finally ended up as a four star general. Not bad for a boy from Midland, Texas.

As I reflect on history I see several real generals elected as President. At least one was worhtless. grant proved to be unable to remain uncorrupted but he was elected.

When we look at the total field we see the same ol sameol...... boring politicos.

Franks and lets say Rice would offer an opportunity to vote for someone not a politician.

On the face it seems resonable to me.

The left will hate him but the center might come for him in a landslide.

I have another Franks story, from Bagram, Afghanistan. One of our guys was quite the shutterbug and he found himself running into Franks.

This was right when the Pentagon-politics-motivated crackdown on special operations forces' mission-related deviation from Army uniform norms was in full cry, and our guy was wearing his black fleece jacket as an outer garment (actually, it was a North Face jacket, one of the original batch that worked so well they were bought for the whole army, and chairwarming weenies immediately started trying to ban the wear of them). He asked to have his picture taken with Franks, and the general affably agreed.

As our guy and another SF man were taking their jackets off to get "legal", Franks stopped them, put his on, and insisted they pose, grinning, in front of the sign the desk wallahs had just erected: Attention: Black Fleece Jacket Will Not Be Worn (or words to that effect).

When the word on that got around, Tommy Franks rose several rungs in the estimation of the Army special forces community. Which is very small and can hardly influence anything, of course.

Those northface jackets became normal outerwear. One of the few uniform additions that make sense and look great.

I never saw a whole lot of attention to uniformity in Iraq. Troops had a tendency (especially in BIAP) to Hollywood a bit.

But why the F not? Ya gots to have some fun in the sandbox.
