In Part Four of his new book, "Character is Destiny," McCain writes about his role as chaplain for Christmas service in his Vietnamese prison, and about a guard who snuck in at night to loosen the ropes that bound McCain, and then snuck in in the morning to tighten them before other guards could notice.
The guard said nothing while performing this kindness, but one time, in the yard, "I became aware of him as he walked near me and then, for a moment, stood very close to me. He did not speak or smile or look at me. He just stared at the ground and then, very casually, he used his foot to draw a cross in the dirt. We both stood looking at his work for a minute until he rubbed it out and walked away."
As I mentioned. . .I don't doubt the story. . .necessarily - but rather, it's long-term impact. . .did he EVER mention this before. . .the affect this had on his life etc. . .
Would like to know if this happened with other American prisoners in this camp. . .and wonder also; how many Christian Vietnamese/Viet-Cong there were actually - even amongst the general population.
Remember reading some of the POW's, McCain 'served' with; were neither friends then. . .nor are they fans, now. . .
I was wondering when the John McCain buildup threads were gonna start shis must be close to the first of many to come.
Comb your hair john brush your pearly whites your about to get your Godsize picture taken !
Yes, I doubt its long-term impact, too. I don't think McCain can win the GOP nomination, and sure hope he doesn't.
Agree. . .and a grain of doubt, does not hurt either.
The reality is. . .every new candidate with Lib leanings/history; knows he needs a Christian or compassionate 'catch'. . .and had better hone one. . .or hint at one. . .whatever.
McCain is easily seen as duplicitous. . .and self-serving and has a real lust for the power of the Presidency.
With that calculation. . .anything possible here.
I absolutely HATE it when this guy extorts his veteranism or POW stuff. Any vet I now worth his salt never ever ever discusses his/her service. EVER. You look at them, they look at you, and you just respect them. Thats it.
This guy is, well, the Moderator won't let me say it (and keep my post).
The beauty of this type of comment out of McCain, is how can you challenge it? I've laid off comments about his imprisonment for much the same reason. I wasn't there and don't know all the facts. He could say J.C. Himself came to visit him in the P.O.W. prision, and I'd have to stand back and wonder...
I can't put my finger on it precisely, but something about John McCain rings as phoney as a three dollar bill. I don't trust him and most often find myself thinking he's only in this for his own personal gain. Perhaps it's the fact that he gets his mug on the tube more than anyone I know of.
I don't want John McCain anywhere near the White House in an offical capacity of any kind. That being said, some of the people I've supported have screwed the pooch as far as I am concerned. Who knows, John McCain might surprise me in the other direction if given a chance.
You will NEVER catch me voting for John McCain. If we can't find anybody better than him to loft, we can just lose for all I care.
If he's our candidate in 2008 against Hillary, I'm on the record right now that I will not vote. Republican leaders, if you're scared to death of a Hillary presidency, you best not loft John McCain.
That is a good point and needs answering. If it was never brought out before, then we have reason to wonder about his motives in bringing it out now.
Too much like slick willie's just happening to find the stones to make the cross on the beach at Normandy.
I really meant the 'long-term impact' of this Christian awakening he refers to. . .did it disappear when he returned and divorced his wife. . .or perhaps it was more a hindsight; or did this memory 'grow' with significance. . .and only now. . .is making a significant impact, albeit political perhaps. . .
I agree with your conclusion here; do not think he can win GOP either. . . but given time frame. . .who can say. . .
Then there is the Demrat ticket or 'independent'. . .McCain could be a real spoiler.
Agree with Rush. . .we should trade him in for Lieberman. . .
It's against the law and when he was caught he claimed not to have know it was against the law.....cough, cough.
Yes, he could be a spoiler, and there may be little we can do to prevent that.
The one slim hope would be to express such hostility toward McCain that he is driven even further to the left, thereby appealing only to Rats and spoiling the election for Hitlery, not for us.
Yeah, sorta like Algore.
I believe it too.
Vietnam was largely Catholic.
Wait a minute, maybe this could account for the fact that McInsane came out of the camp heavier than when he went in?
That's not true at all.
McInsane and Dusty Harry tag teamed to dis POW and MIA families during hearings in late 80 or early 90....I've never forgotten. At one time, I had the transcripts. And several nasty letters between myself and Harry (he was my senator, then)I have despised McLame for a very long time..
I'll bet it's seared, just seared into his memory.
That. . .or we start making a case against 'short' Presidents. . . ;^)
My recollection of that event was that he was told in advance. . .no photos - did it/used them anyway. . .
(Or was that algore. . .or Kerry. . .) Whatever; Libs certainly have a admirable 'MO'. . .
The man is already exploiting his POW status, similar to the gigolo and his VN 'service'.
