EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Three South Jersey boys have lost their parents in horrible crash in their Egg Harbor Township house.
About 4:30 a.m., a sport utility vehicle crashed into the bedroom of Jose Varela, 40, and Blanco Santiago, 32, landing on top of the sleeping couple and killing them. The house is located along busy Route 40, at the Black Horse Pike and Athens Avenue.
The couple's three sons ages 16, 14, and 10, were also home at the time of the accident, but they were not injured.
Police have identified the driver of the Chevrolet Blazer as 27-year-old Ober Canales, of Atlantic City. Lt. Ted Kammer, of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, said that the unlicensed driver tried to flee from the accident scene, but was stopped by witnesses who kept him until police arrived on the scene.
Investigators said Canales is a Honduran national who had fraudulent Social Security and resident alien papers with him.
Police said that they are looking into a number of possible causes for the crash, including weather conditions and driving under the influence. Police and the Atlantic County prosecutors' office said it was raining hard at the time of the accident.
Canales is facing two counts of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving while intoxicated. He is being held in jail in lieu of $750,000.
Relatives said the family was planning to move to a quieter street because they thought the Black Horse Pike was too busy and dangerous.

How utterly tragic.
Investigators said Canales is a Honduran national who had fraudulent Social Security and resident alien papers with him.

Just another Bush-Border fan, doing the jobs Americans don't want to do, eh George???
Very sad. the family lived about 20 miles from me. Three children too. So very sad.
Why aren't they charging him for being an illegal alien
What an absolute nightmare for the 3 children. I hope they have family nearby to take them in.
And of course had the driver been a white guy from middle America, you wouldn't give a rat's a*s. Not that you really care two people died. You're just gleeful that that driver was an illegal so you can have another chance to bash Bush.
One has to wonder just how close that house was to the traffic. Apparently, they already knew their lives were somehow in danger, but I assume poverty kept them there. Really sad. The kids...no college I assume...unless there was a life insurance policy (which there should have been but probably wasn't in this case - they would have moved if they had any kind of disposable income at all for things like insurance policies).
But the military would give the young men a chance in life and, later, to go to college.
[You're just gleeful that that driver was an illegal so you can have another chance to bash Bush.]
I don't think the posters meant it that way. I think they are furious, as I am, that illegal aliens are driving around our highways without licenses...and committing such major felonies as driving while intoxicated.
That reminds me - what HAS Bush done to secure the borders lately?
Absolutely over the top, as usual. Don't you ILLEGAL lover's get tired of taking long walks on short piers? How silly you people are. Blackbird
More US citizens for the body count; dying at the whim of homeland insurgent invaders. The news we never hear...
Was the SUV properly documented to be in the USA?
Will it be charged, do you think?
dang, just dang......
that's it....I'm calling the governor.....and demanding
20 years for that SUV.
And being an unlicensed illegal immigrant driving in said conditions in a strange country.
Probably not, but it's maker is ripe for a lawsuit seeing how the driver obviously has no money.
It seems like I am reading similar stories every day of the week...illegal aliens kills American citizens while driving drunk. No different than the terrorists who killed 3000 on September 11, 2001; IMHO.
think 20 years is too short.....?????
uh oh, someone contact the authorities, this one's catching on.
