Hillary Clinton to Co-Sponsor Flag Protection Bill

Sen. Bob Bennett has a new ally in his fight to make it a crime to deface the U.S. flag: Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The New York Democrat and former First Lady has signed on as a co-sponsor of the Republican Bennett's bill. And she's taking some heat for the alliance, the Salt Lake Tribune's Washington bureau reported.

Bennett's bill would allow the government to fine or imprison someone who intentionally defaces or destroys the flag.

Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines says Clinton's backing comes after talking with veterans who want the flag protected.

"Burning or destroying an American flag is a despicable act that disrespects the sacrifices of our brave veterans and soldiers who fought to protect the very freedom of speech that flag burners exploit," Clinton said in a June statement. "I find this abhorrent and will endeavor to make sure our laws reflect this."

The American Legion this week blasted Clinton for sponsoring Bennett's bill instead of backing a constitutional amendment proposed by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. Hatch, who has secured 57 Senate sponsors to his resolution, says amending the constitution would prohibit U.S. judges from striking down any law that protects the flag.

"In deference to the senator, she may be sincere in her quest for a law, but she is sincerely wrong," said American Legion National Commander Thomas Bock. "The remedy she has chosen, a statute without an enabling amendment to the U.S. Constitution, is a long road to a dead-end."

Neither Bennett nor Hatch, however, has been able to get any momentum behind their proposals. Hatch's bill has been stuck in committee since April and Bennett's bill hasn't moved since October when he introduced it for the second time.

This shows how clueless Hillary is.

Hillary is proposing a law that the courts already ruled unconstitutional.

The only way to change the law is for a constitutional amendment.

With Menendez now replacing Corzine their 66 senators on board for the amendment. One less than the 67 that is needed.

Hillary's vote will keep flag burning alive.

Their are 34 votes against banning flag burning in the senate with Hillary being one of them.

Hillary is triangulating again. The American Legion came out blasting her calling her on her triangulations games.

Hillary is backstabbing the American Legion's position with her triangulation game.

Hillary's proposal is nothing more than complete bs. The courts have already ruled her law unconstitutional. The only way to change it is through a constitutional law.

Either be for it or against it. But Hillary always has to have it both ways. She gets to vote to her base while appearing to triangulate.

Hillary is on the left of this issue.

This is Hillary's triangulation game at work at its finest.

Only Hillary can take the left position and backstab the American Legion with a law that has already been struck down and be praised for taking the conservative position.

The only way to ban flag burning is through a constititional amendment and Hillary is against that. Flag Burning is one vote short in the senate. The closest the american legion will ever come. Their are 66 votes for the constititional amendment one vote short of two thirds needed in the senate. The house has already passed it by two thirds. All 50 states have said they would ratify it.

Their are 34 senators against the constitutional amendment. Their are 13 democrats even for it including salazar who is co-sponsoring it. Even left wing menendez is for it.

The veterans groups want the constitutional amendment. Hillary is against the veterans groups position. Hillary is trying to please her moonbat base at the same time as appearing to be for the ban of flag burning.

Hillary singlehandely with her vote is going to keep flag burning legal. If she was for the constititional amendment their would be 67 votes and it would be ratified by the states.

Instead Hillary is going into major triangulation mode by voting with her base to vote against the constitutional amendment then proposing a law that has already been rejected by the courts.

The funny part is that the MSM is so clueless they are playing right along with her.
