BAGHDAD, Iraq - The American military Friday arrested a high-ranking member of al-Qaida in Iraq in the town of Ramadi, the U.S. Marines said.

Amir Khalaf Fanus, also known in the Ramadi area as “the Butcher,” was wanted for criminal activities including murder and kidnapping, Capt. Jeffrey S. Pool said in a statement from the town, located 70 miles west of Baghdad.

“He is the highest ranking al-Qaida in Iraq member to be turned into Iraqi and U.S. officials **************************by local citizens*************************,” Pool said. “His capture is another indication that the local citizens tire of the insurgents’ presence within their community.”

By local citizens eh? But I thought that all the iraqis wanted *AMERICANS* to die? I thought that Iraq was going to turn into a civil war?

It seems like it is just that, turning into a civil war but not the kind that the liberal media would like to see.

The average iraqi is turning against the "insurgents".(if you could even call that a civil war)

And WTF! He's not even an insurgent anyways, he's a G** D*** member of Al Qaeda *%$# &%#^&#$ (#^%&$# These people in the media..................

Good news, although I'm a little disappointed that they headline wasn't "U.S. kills high-ranking member of al-Qaida."

Hal a flippin lu ya brave Iraqi's doing themselves proud. Just a few thousand more and the country will be solidly in the ranks of those who just might enjoy some of the benefits of freedom and liberty with the knowledge of what it takes to preserve them for their posterity. I hope they are writing the stories of heroism. It takes guts to do what is right when wrong prevails or has prevailed in the past. Having your head removed while you are alive and well or being blowed up doesn't exactly inspire step forward action in dealing with the perpetrators of intimidation.

Yes, this MSNBC "story" is very misleading. They can't even get the small stuff straight:

The part that they distort is that it was local citizens of Ramadi (a Sunni hotbed) who arrested him and turned him over to the U.S. I would say that other reports who said that he was then "detained" by the U.S. are more accurate:

"Said Captain Pool, 'This is an odd press release to write because I am used to writing about what the U.S. and Iraqi military are doing. This release is about what local citizens did today. I am hopeful that this becomes a trend.'"

http://rapidrecon.threatswatch.org/2005/12/arramadi-citizens-haul-in-the/

The MSNBC "piece" distorts the real story here --- Sunni Iraqi's, even in Ramadi are fed up with AQI.

Dead men don't tell tales. There will be plenty of time to kill him later on.

Yes, I can see how that would be a great headline, but how about we get as much info as possible from him. Then, when we're finished with him, we might see a headline like this..."al-qaida big killed while trying to escape." :-)

“His capture is another indication that the local citizens tire of the insurgents’ presence within their community.”

AND that they're beginning to have more and more faith in our brave fighting men. I mean, here come the infidels, whom they've always been taught are cowards, and they're absolutely relentless -- I'm sure in their eyes, seemingly fearless -- in taking on the worst of the worst, the scariest of the scariest, that islamofascism can throw at them. And the infidels kick a**. Every... single... time. Must be awe inspiring.

“He is the highest ranking al-Qaida in Iraq member to be turned into Iraqi and U.S. officials".

I think the real story here is that MSNBC refers to him as a member of "al-Qaida in Iraq" as if this was a seperate branch of al-Qaida that has always existed. But the dems and the MSM usually say that al-Qaida was not in Iraq!!

I know it. But it's the real truth that the media desperately wants to keep away from the american people.

"the american people have a right to know" - only when a conservative is in the hotseat

This is incredible! When the citizens of Ramadi have turned on them, it's all over but the shouting. Al Qaeda has lost Iraq.
