WASHINGTON Former President Bill Clinton says more women and minorities must be encouraged to study math and engineering in order to fill the dwindling ranks of scientists.

Clinton spoke to the National Education Association about the growing concern among scientists and universities that tougher immigration requirements since Nine-Eleven make it harder for the country to attract brain power from overseas. As he puts it, "We may have kept a few bombs out of our country, but we also kept thousands and thousands of brains out."

He says the way to boost U-S engineering and science is to focus on American children -- particularly those groups that don't enroll in science programs in large numbers. Clinton says if "younger women, African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans went into science and engineering at the same rate as white men, America would have no shortage of scientists."

And as far as a lack of minorities in science and engineering, there's no one holding them back from pursuing technical degrees. It's their choice...

Why do women and minorities need encouragement? Does Bill think they are too stupid to decide for themselves what to do?

Or is it that affirmative action (minorities at least) draws too many skilled minorities away from the more rigorous technical fields to the government and other positions where their race will let them skate with less effort?

Engineering pays well, but science doesn't. Whereas a simple bachelor's degree in engineering will get you a good paying job, it takes a PhD to get a good paying job in the sciences...unless you just want to be a "technician."

It may be a good thing that foreign "brains" are being kept out. Eventually the shortage will cause the pay to go up.

Whatever, if you want Americans to pursue a field of study, it has to put bread on the table.

The reason we need to import "brains" from abroad is because the liberal Rats have destroyed the public education system. They elect little Johnny and little Mary to take such illustrious future builders as "Jane has Two Dads" or "History rewritten and devoid of the pesky truth" or "Introduction to the Koran" instead of math, English, history, and science in a challenging environment that prepares students for college (not these institutions are any better today) or the real world. The liberals don't enforce true learning or hard work. If the kids aren't happy, then by God all their whiny needs must be accommodated. We won't have homework as it cuts into their internet or MTV time. The kids don't like algebra, that's ok, we will let them take Al Gore's fuzzy math course where there are no right answers. Public education today is just socialist, politically correct indoctrination churning out people devoid of any ability to think for themselves or function in the workplace. Of course this is how the Rats want it. They are grooming their utopian constituency. Our public education today is a total disaster and we can put the failure squarely on the Federal government and the communists in the NEA. God save the Republic.
