Christmas By Song

O Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles)

This section takes an individual Christmas song and then provides you with as many different artists performing it for you to enjoy.

We will not be playing all the artists and versions that we have. We don't have the space, but we feel you'll get enough variations to enjoy yourself.

Background Information: The Englishman, John Francis Wade, wrote both the words and the music, Adeste Fideles. The Musical score was first published in 1782 in Samuel Webbe's An Essay on the Church Plain Chant in 1782. John Francis Wade first included it in his own 1751 publication of Cantus Diversi. The lyrics were first published in 1760.

If you hear someone using tissues, it's MoJo. This song has watery effects.

To our British and Aussie allies, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Children's Christmas Music From Around The World

The music below is safe for all kids! We have Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa songs from kids around the world!
All of the music is geared specifically for children.

Warning: This section mentions Jesus quite a lot. Just so no one writes MoJo to tell her that there's too much Jesus and why I chose to do so.

Answer: CAUSE I CAN!

Christmas By Song

Hark! The Herald Angel Sings

Background Info:

Felix Medelssohn and Chuck Wesley

Charles Wesley (his brother, John Wesley, founded the Methodist church) is credited with authoring over 3,000 hymns. The lyrics to Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (1739) is one of them. Actually, what he wrote is "Hark how all the welkin rings/Glory to the King of Kings." ("Welkin" means, apparently, "heaven".)  A colleague, the Calvinist Whitfield, substituted the familiar opening line over the protests of the author. Thank welkin for Whitfield. Christmas By Song

Joy To The World

Background Info: Joy to the World
The words and lyrics of the old Christmas carol 'Joy to the World' were written in 1719 by Isaac Watts (1674-1748). The father of John Watts was a Non-conformist and so extreme were his views that he was imprisoned twice. His father's influence over Isaac was demonstrated when he choose to attend Nonconformist Academy at Stoke Newington in preference to a University. Watts was ordained as a Pastor of an Independent congregation. He wrote many hymns and Carols and was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree by the the University of Edinburgh in 1728. The music to the carol is by George Frederick Handel (1685-1759).

MoJo Thought:
Have you ever noticed while reading articles that when referring to GOD that many folks decide to write it *G-D*? What is that? Is it supposed to mean that it is less potent and offensive by keeping the *o* from appearing? My suggestion to these folks isn't to use God at all. If you can't add the *o*, don't write it. This is true for those of you that believe or don't.

Religious History
1520 German reformer Martin Luther publicly burned Pope Leo X's bull, "Exsurge Domine," which had demanded that Luther recant his "protestant" heresies, including that of justification by faith alone rather than through purchased indulgences or other papal favors.
1593 Italian archaeologist Antonio Bosio first descended into the subterranean Christian burial chambers, located under the streets of Rome. Bosio was dubbed the "Columbus of the Catacombs," and his books long remained the standard work on the underground tombs of the early Roman Church.
1854 The second construction of the structure known as St Paul's Outside the Walls was consecrated. The church is one of four major basilicas in Rome. The original edifice was erected by Roman emperor Constantine in 324, and rebuilt as a larger basilica in the late fourth century by the Emperor Honorius (395).
1905 "The Gift of the Magi," a short story by William Sydney Porter, 43, was first published. Known by his pen name, O. Henry, Porter's writings were characterized by trick endings, making him a master of short story telling.
1956 English Christian apologist C.S. Lewis wrote in a letter: 'In so far as the things unseen are manifested by the things seen, one might from one point of view call the whole material universe an allegory.'

STUPID WARNING LABELS!

By BECKY TODD

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- How dumb do companies think we are? From the looks of the warning labels they slap on their products, they must believe we're complete morons!

Here, we've collected some of the most ridiculous advice from smartypants manufacturers:

•Sleeping Pills -- Caution: May make you drowsy.
•Lighters -- Contents flammable.
•Dog Shampoo -- The contents of this bottle should not be fed to fish.
•Shampoo -- Intended for use on hair only -- not eyes.
•Stroller -- Remove infant before folding for storage.
•Curling Iron -- Not for internal use.
•Microwave Oven -- Do not use for drying pets.
•Child's Playhouse -- This is not a toy.
•Toilet Bowl Cleaning Brush -- Do not use orally.
•King Size Mattress -- Warning: Do not attempt to swallow.
•Can of Insecticide -- This spray is harmful to insects.
•Firecrackers -- Do not light while holding in mouth.
•Fat-Free Potato Chips -- May cause anal leakage.
•Peanut Butter -- Warning: May contain nuts.
•TV Dinner -- Remove plastic wrap cover before eating.
•Batteries -- Do not swallow. C or D batteries may cause choking.
•.22-Caliber Rifle -- May cause injury or death.
•Hardware Store Rotary Drill -- This product not intended for dental purposes.
•Hemorrhoid Suppositories -- Remove aluminum wrapping before insertion.

•Electric Cattle Prod -- For use on animals only.

Thought for the day :
"I occasionally play works by contemporary composers and for two reasons. First to discourage the composer from writing any more and secondly to remind myself how much I appreciate Beethoven."

Good morning Troops, Veterans, family members, Canteen, and Lurkers:

How is everyone today??

Hope everyone is having calmer weather today. If not, stay safe and warm!

Thank you to all the Canteen Deejays that add music daily to the FReeper Canteen.
If you enjoy the music, please consider writing to each of them individually via FReepmail or on the thread.

Most people don't have the slightest idea what goes into playing music. It isn't difficult, but it does require, time, and effort.
So? If you have enjoyed any of the music by any of the Canteen Deejays, let them know. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

On Christmas weekend, we will flood this place with more holiday music than you can imagine. There will be Christmas, Hanukkah, and some Kwanzaa music. For those of our Troops that don't celebrate any of these holidays, fret not--we haven't forgotten you. We will have regular music selections for your enjoyment.

If you are having difficulty listening to our music, keep in mind that we gear all the music to be played via Windows Media Player. You can listen to the music through WinAmp and various other MP3 players. We don't usually play .rm or .ram files because those are RealPlayer formats and if you've been around awhile...you'll know that MoJo loathes RealPlayer with a passion. There are easy ways to convert those files to .wma or .mp3 formats.

Beginning sometime in January or February, the Music Mayhem is going to take everyone on a musical journey of sorts. We're going to begin the History of Rock N Roll. We haven't figured out how we'll do it, but we're going to do it. In order to appreciate the musical landscape today, it's always good to go back to the beginning.

Thank you to all of you that sent in requests for themed threads. We cannot guarantee that you will see them as an exclusive music thread, but we will try to fulfill the request.
