The world's largest automaker is poised to become the Las Vegas Monorail's newest sponsor.
General Motors Corp. has agreed to the framework of a deal that would give the monorail a much-needed cash infusion while allowing GM to set up a public demonstration track outside the rapid transit line's Sahara Hotel stop, Las Vegas Monorail President and CEO Curtis Myles said Thursday.

--ping to Willie Green--
Too bad GM will be bancrupt before this project completes.
They're gonna try and "levitate" GM bonds..
From where? I bet the taxpayers in Vegas have something to loose.
...a company source confirmed a six-month deal is in the works that would include naming rights to the Sahara station and possibly theming rights to one train, which essentially involves wrapping the train inside and out in advertising.A drop in the bucket for the GM advertising budget...
Financial terms were not disclosed, but at base ad rates the deal could be worth $1.5 million for the privately financed monorail,...
They really should complete construction to connect to the airport though.
THAT would increase ridership for sure.
--so far, the taxpayer contribution is that the monorail is considered a non-profit organization, for tax purposes--(as well as really being one)--the plot down the road is "federal funds" for extending it to McCarran and Cashman Field--
I find it very ironic that GM is out selling a monorail system. The company that used World War II profits to buy up all the light rail systems across the USA (including the biggest of them all in Los Angeles) all to sell cars to the returning GI's.
--they lost the anti-trust case on that too--time passes--
Very clever. They're almost bankrupt, so they thought they'd dump a bunch of money down this rathole.
Sheesh!
Since there is zero luggage space on the tiny cars, extending it to McCarran makes little sense. Extending it over to Excalibur/Luxor/Mandalay Bay would be a better use of the money.
And also, the stations are about a half-mile from the hotel registration desks, so in light of that the McCarran proposal makes even less sene.
--that still wouldn't make it a reasonable way for anybody to get to work nor would it change the fact that it doesn't really get the tourists where they want to go either--
GM must have thought the Mag stood for magic not magnetic.
