A plane has apparently crashed through a fence at Midway airport in Chicago. Southwest airline 737 plane now sitting in intersection of 55th and Central. Channel 7 has confirmed, fire and ambulances on way. Details still sketchy.

In those pictures, you see the beach , but, after they had the hurricane last year, only about a 3 feet band of sand is still there, and the rest is a bunch of hugh rocks that make up the beach now.

Does anyone? The chances of that happening are so tiny that changing the Wright Admendment would have virtually no effect on it. Far, far higher odds that you'll die while driving to work tomorrow on a dry road in good weather. So should we refrain from driving "for the children"? That was basically the argument put forth that I responded to.

The best description is a paved-over gravel bed that will stop an airplane overshooting the runway. Do such systems not rip the landing gear off planes? To be sure, ripping the landing gear off a plane might be a minor thing compared to letting it crash into a gas station, but it would seem that there would be no controlability beyond the fact that the thing would stop. A cable would seem to offer much greater control.

Just as an update, the original flight # 8804 was cancelled and reassigned as flight # 8806. It was apparently permitted to go directly to Midway, and arrived there at 3:12 AM. I don't know why the flight number was changed, other than maybe the change in destination from O'Hare to Midway.

I've flown into and out of Midway on Southwest about 6 or 8 times, all within 3 months of 9/11. The folks at Southwest were great. I like Midway, too.

That Flightaware site is just the slickest thing. If you go check out the flightpath for SWA1248, you can see where it got stacked up in a holding pattern southeast of Midway for several turns before coming in on approach.

That link will only show last night's flight until today's SWA1248 flies (if it does with that number).

We use the auto brakes on all 5 models of 737 at Continental, and they work very well.

This morning, all the media calling it a fatal plane crash.
Kind of sad to make such a headline when that's not exactly what happened last night. Tragic that a child lost his life, but the media would do well to be more honest with less hype.

Prediction - it will come out that either the pilot or air traffic controller who normally is involved in this flight/landing is in the National Guard and in Iraq. Thus, it will be Bush's fault this tragedy happened.
You wait.
