Federal authorities announced Thursday the biggest eco-terrorism bust in U.S. history, clearing up a series of arsons that plagued the Pacific Northwest from 1998 to 2001.

The U.S. Attorney for Oregon, Karen J. Immergut, announced the arrests of six alleged ecosaboteurs from Portland to New York accused of taking part in four arsons attributed to the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front, as well as the vandalizing of power transmission lines.

The nine-year investigation cleared up, in order, the June 1998 arson of a U.S. Department of Agriculture building in Olympia; the December 1998 torching of U.S. Forest Industries in Medford; the January 2001 arson at Superior Lumber Co. in Glendale; and the May 2001 arson at Jefferson Poplar Farms in Clatskanie.

Authorities also announced they have cleared up the downing of a power transmission line near Bend on the eve of the 2000 millennium celebration.

Arrested were Sanislas G. Meyerhoff, 28, in Charlottesville, Va.; Daniel G. McGowan, 31, in New York; Kevin M. Tubbs, 36, in Springfield, Ore.; William C. Rodgers, 40, of Prescott, Ariz.; Sarah K. Harvey, 28, in Flagstaff, Ariz.; and Chelsea D. Gerlach, 28, in Portland.

Each of the six was charged with taking part in one or more of the crimes.

We dont need a word for ecoterrorism, its either vandalism or terrorism.

True, it is a bit of a misleading term. When I first heard it several years ago, I thought it referred to people terrorizing squirrels or something.

....How do you know they did it to intimidate?....

Terrorism is intimidation.

Acts of terrorism are committed to intimidate and gain a goal. The goal in the mind of a ecowhackjob can be any kooky thing that comes to mind.

" But then I also believe that there is a right to keep and bear arms in the Constitution which soon may go they way of the dinosaurs as well."

Only if we as Americans allow it!

Well,

If my right to keep and bear arms ever gets outlawed, I'll just hide my guns.

That way, if I ever get hungry and need to pop a squirrel to eat, I'll have 'em (guns).

They'll also come in handy if anybody ever comes around here wanting to tell me I can't have my own personal protection.

They won't be mine if they aint' on my property, right?

I remember reading about this whole eco-terrorism situation least 10 years ago (in The American Spectator, I believe). At the time, however, the Clinton administration was only concerned with targeting pro-lifers and making sure abortuaries were easily accessible. The Feds could have stopped these terrorists in their tracks years ago, had they been permitted...

People should be reminded that the ecoterrorists are the descendents of the University of Oregon anti-war movement that was very active during the Vietnam War. Then, the ROTC building was bombed, professors were threatened, and student leaders were active everywhere along the West Coast and made their appearances in left-wing meetings in New York and Wisconsin. During that period, and even today, a degree from the University of Oregon, Eugene, isn't worth a bucket of warm spit.
Oregon, a university of academic has-beens and never will bes, has offered a home to some of the craziest Marxist-influenced teachers in the social sciences. In the seventies the god was Ehrlich, in the eighties in was Gramschi, in the nineties it was Chomsky, and today it is the Kyoto protocols. So, the bombthrowers are just continuing in a longstanding tradition.

I wonder if any of these perps live in anything but mud houses, use electricity in their daily lives, or drive around anything but a bicycle?!

Perhaps their thinking processes could be partially restored by the b-12 found in meat. The key to recovering their sanity entire is beyond me.

Art Bell had one of these Oregonian types on. Didn't own a car, rode a bike, etc. Bell asked about a recent trip to
Europe, (probably to protest something) "Did you swim?" "No. I used an airline." "Um, if you needed [some medical
procedure], would you have it if it used drugs created from cutting down the "rain forest?" "Absolutely."

"If you were starving and a Spotted Owl settled down next to a deep fryer..."

Okay, I made the last one up.
