Musharraf urges Muslims to shun terror

PTI | December 08, 2005 | 00:39 IST

Pakistan President Pervez Musharrafhas said that the "failure to resolve Kashmir and Palestine issues led to desperation, confusion and extremism," and asked Islamic countries to ban extremist groups.

Addressing an extraordinary summit of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Mecca on Wednesday, Musharraf said "our differences and divisions are exploited. Our failure to secure just resolution of disputes such as Palestine and Kashmir has spawned desperation, confusion and extremism".

"We must condemn and reject all forces of terrorism and extremism, by banning organisations which preach hate and violence. We must promote the Islamic values of tolerance and moderation," Pakistan's official news agency APP quoted him a saying.

Musharraf said senseless acts of terrorism committed by a "handful of misguided individuals" in the name of Islam maligned the "noble faith of peace, tolerance and compassion. We need to look within; we need to search our soul."

The Islamic world had the options of following a confrontationist course or a conciliatory one to move forward in the comity of nations.

The confrontationist course can only lead to further destruction and deprivation, he said, stressing the need to adopt a conciliatory approach for the well being of future generations.

"From this holy city of peace and tolerance, I appeal to all extremists in our society to see reason and shun the path of violence, which offers no salvation and will only lead to more pain and more misery," he said.

Musharraf asked the Islamic world to seek knowledge from Quranic Injunctions and respect human rights. "We should promote full respect of human rights as enjoyed by Islam, specially the rights of women and children."

"The answer is crystal clear; we have to break out from this stagnation of centuries," he said.

He said most Islamic societies were struggling to evolve stable institutions for governance and remained far removed from the expanding frontiers of knowledge, education, science and technology.

"Our economies remain fragile and mostly dependent on raw material production. Even the rich among us are consumers of the fruits of modernisation and innovation of other advanced nations who are shaping the direction of progress and future of the world," he said.

It is ok to be not well versed with the region.

Only things one needs to know are the following facts:

1) Musharraf is a Dictator (never won any election for anything)

2) He was the former army chief who was 100% instrumental in creating and cultivating Taliban in Afghanistan

3) He has a radical islamist sword hanging over his head that can drop any minute

Sure, he has been a reasonable ally in WOT so far - only catching and killing terrorist when it benefits his standing vis-a-vis US. But, trusting him with the kind of rhetoric he threw out at the OIC meeting is as good as trusting snakes.

Thank you for the kind words, and I apologize for my lack of knowledge: I do know there is an historical animus between India and Pakistan, likely exacerbated by the Cold War.

What would be an optimal result for the region? Both nations are nuclear-enabled, as I recall, but I don't think hostilities are to the level of Israel/Hamas, are they?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Merry Chrismas and HNY to you too.

Hostilities are deep between the two populations. But, there is *calm* prevailing at the Government level.

There are only two outcomes possible:

1) Status quo (military calm with heart-felt hatred)

2) Pakistan gets obliterated (India's military might is overwhemlmingly large) and India gets set back decades in progress

Outcome #1 is ALWAYS the preferred one, by both sides and me!

By me too, Brother.

My college-era idealism and naivete (both thankfully shed) are bleeding out at this point, knowing it's midday there and I'm getting ready for bed. But what is the cause of the "hatred"? My guess is religion, but don't both nations have a common cultural identity? If that's too sensitive a question, feel free to not answer. I'm not trolling nor playing Devil's Advocate - I just LOVE hearing from non-US FReepers every now and then.

The "nuke club" consists of something like 29 countries, but you don't see most of those countries threatening their neighbors or sworn enemies with their stash of nukes like Iran, North Korea, India, or Pakistan. Countries who parade their warheads around every week it seems like prized possessions.

The cause for hatred is "Kashmir".

You are exactly right that both populations are culturally close. One would think we get along a lot better. Unfortunately, no!

Hatred has not much to do with religion. India has 150 million muslims (in fact more than the 130 million or so in Pakistan). Indian hindus and muslims fight once in a while (and may be even kill a few of each), but there is no hardcode heartfelt hatred. But, Pakistanis and Indians feel that kind of hatred, and it all traces back to the region of Kashmir.

Sad truth is that there will NEVER be a solution to the Kashmir problem. It is impossible to have any solution.

It is sad that you include India with the other three rougue countries. Sure, I can be called biased. But, India is the only Democratic country in the list you mentioned by name. It is also the only country that has responsibly dealth with nuclear technology and the weapons. Same can't be said for Iran, North Korea and Pakistan (the source of nuclear technology to Iran and North Korea).

Thankfully, the US Government of President Bush realizes this distinction, and has recently rewarded India with nuclear fuel opportunities.

Excellent point and observation. For instance, why is South Africa in possession of ballistics? While we, willingly-subject to the rule of law, must recognize India, Pakistan, South Africa, Iran and (arguably) North Korean capability, what keeps these conflicts from escalating?

Economics and Politics? Heck, if it works...

NEVER say that. I still think of Egypt/Israel in that regard: sure, it's imperfect, and probably feckless, but it was still a step mediated by our worst President in a century.

My prayers are with you.

They do just not get how their doctrine of nursing old grudges with hatred and murder is crippling their societies.

If they embraced the Christian doctrine of love and forgiveness, forgive, forget and move on, their societies would flourish instead of being miserable hellholes.

He was the former army chief who Former? From what I know he's still the current army chief and plans to hang on for much longer with US support. The uS support is there becoause we know not what sort of creature will follow him. An islamist militarist (like the late decitator Gen. Zia) with nukes would mean trouble.

Oh you mean like in the Balkins, or like during the US civil war, or maybe you mean like on-going conflict that Israel is having to bear for the last 40 odd years.

Speaking of miserable hellholes, ever been to one. I have...met some of the most happiest people ever. It was eye opening. Suggest you make a trip.

The Balkans, the Civil War, Israel, none of them were religious wars, started by Christian churchgoers and ministers.

"from this holy city of tolerance..."

Yeah, when I think of Islam I think of tolerance. Hey Pervez, how come no non-muslim can step foot in Mecca? How come no bible can be brought to Saudi Arabia? Until you call for these policies to be reversed whatever you say is nothing but hot air.
