Shoe Bomber Alert Preceded Airport Shooting
ABC News ^ | Dec. 7, 2005

Posted on 12/07/2005 8:52:13 PM PST by 11th_VA

Federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News they had been on the alert for a possible shoe bomber when a federal air marshal opened fire at the Miami International Airport today.

In today's incident, an agitated passenger claimed to have a bomb in his backpack was shot and killed by a federal air marshal, officials said. No bomb was found.

Officials say a 50-year old Egyptian man was stopped six days ago at New York's John F. Kennedy airport. Sources say he had a suspicious pair of shoes that tested positive five times for the explosive substance TATP on the interior of his shoes between the heel and sole.

Federal officials say the man's shoes are remarkably similar to those used by shoe bomber Richard Reid, who attempted to blow up an American Airlines jet over the Atlantic four years ago.

The Egyptian man's destination was Des Moines, Iowa, sources say, and he claimed he was a student at Iowa State University, in Ames.

Strangely, after holding him overnight, airport security in New York released him. The FBI was notified after he was released. Now the FBI has put out a nationwide alert.

The man shot dead in Miami appears to have been deranged, but the missing Egyptian may help explain why air marshals acted as they did.

Please do your research if you want to diss me! I have been one of the 'tinfoil hat' crowd following the Ok. student suicide bomber from the beginning! Writing Michelle Malkin and anyone else that would listen! I don't see how this falls in with that sort of threat. Tell me what I have missed?

"Sounds as if there was a test run..." Or a diversion.

...Or both. He may have had residue on his shoe as a way of testing airport security, and he may have been "bearding" for someone else on the flight who needed to get through. However, I doubt that they let him walk away from the five positive explosives tests without verifying that the shoes had more than the slightest trace of TATP on them.

True, but I was actually referring to the incident today. We had all eyes glued on the D concourse in the Miami airport for hours. I wounder what was going in the rest of the country?

Hopefully nothing, I am not one of the tin foil crowd, but I do think we are overdue for some sort of attack, and naive if we don't think it will happen.

Don't fall for it folks..this is the 'catch and release' program of the LSM! They fish you out of warm waters..and then throw you into some blue frigid backwash. The minute they get some dumb ass at any government agency to say: 'We were looking for a shoe bomber'...then they will jump an ass to say: "then why did you kill someone with a mental handicap'?

I say the meaning of such is much deeper..The only way the Democrats can get a good parking place in Washington now... is if they make mental illness a physical handicap....lol

They said he failed the shoe test 5 times !!!

The rule msut be that you need to fail the shoe test at least six times to be detained. However, if you flunk the "I've got a bomb" test, you get your results immediately. And, there are no makeups.

I am quite astonished that a man today committed suicide by asking that US Marshalls do what they are commissioned to do in/around airports given a guy aping a suicide bomber.

I have heard of suicidals arranging for deaths that appear as murders.

an AP story today on the Miami shooting by an air marshal carries this tidbit:

[quote]Officials say a 50-year old Egyptian man was stopped six days ago at New York's John F. Kennedy airport. Sources say he had a suspicious pair of shoes that tested positive five times for the explosive substance TATP on the interior of his shoes between the heel and sole.

The Egyptian man's destination was Des Moines, Iowa, sources say, and he claimed he was a student at Iowa State University, in Ames.

Let him go?

Now, if this is true, it seems peculiar.
(1)Is this test for explosives so sensitive we get lots of false positives?
(2)Was TSA too busy to contact Iowa and check out his story?
(3) Wouldn't it be standard procedure for TSA to notify the FBI when they are releasing someone under such circumstances?
(4)Is everyone on the government payroll an idiot?

Nothing new - but there was a statement that regarding a smoke flume that more or less equalled a 'yes, there was a missile' in that they opined that the smoke flume the pilot saw was not 'dangerous' to the plane.

You know how that goes.

Surely they let him go to follow him and just put this story out to attempt to get him & his ilk to feel "at ease" so that they can catch more big fish.

At least that's what I tell myself so that I can sleep at night...

It's quite likely that they released him deliberately and now they have him under surveillance, for obvious reasons that I don't need to mention. It's also entirely possible that somebody make a major mistake at the TSA. Of course, Nightline would never mention the first scenario while a Republican administration is running the TSA.

That is a solid, plausible theory and it's likely that is why he was released.
