Federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News they had been on the alert for a possible shoe bomber when a federal air marshal opened fire at the Miami International Airport today.
In today's incident, an agitated passenger claimed to have a bomb in his backpack was shot and killed by a federal air marshal, officials said. No bomb was found.
Officials say a 50-year old Egyptian man was stopped six days ago at New York's John F. Kennedy airport. Sources say he had a suspicious pair of shoes that tested positive five times for the explosive substance TATP on the interior of his shoes between the heel and sole.
Federal officials say the man's shoes are remarkably similar to those used by shoe bomber Richard Reid, who attempted to blow up an American Airlines jet over the Atlantic four years ago.
The Egyptian man's destination was Des Moines, Iowa, sources say, and he claimed he was a student at Iowa State University, in Ames.
Strangely, after holding him overnight, airport security in New York released him. The FBI was notified after he was released. Now the FBI has put out a nationwide alert.
The man shot dead in Miami appears to have been deranged, but the missing Egyptian may help explain why air marshals acted as they did.
TATP is made from acetone and hydrogen peroxide, if I understand correctly. It is cheap to make but unstable, and can blow up accidentally (like on a bench outside a stadium in Oklahoma, for example.)
TSA: Thousands of Stupid A$$holes.
Agree
Not everyone, just 90% of them. The other 10% do 90% of the good work.
Well, if he's an innocent guy he would have gone on to Iowa. Seems as though they can't find him. The one place you really don't want to try and tail someone would be NY City IMO.
Can they even be fired?
I remember Bush wanting the ability to fire TSA workers and I remember the rats squealing "unfair" but I don't know how it turned out.
NEW YORK AIRPORT SECURITY: STUCK ON STUPID.
They must have gone to the same class as the border patrol on the subject of detaining people.
CATCH & RELEASE
They play Oregon (I think) in some bowl game.
"Holy crap" ping for later reference...
"He had positive traces of explosives on his shoes and they let him go???????
And nobody bothered to check on his records at Iowa State until after they let him go??
Total incompetence. They should be fired. And they better hope this guy don't turn up in a terrorist incident."
I can't believe they would have let him go without checking his I.D. That would be crazy.
I live in Ames and I'm not too happy about this!
I don't believe our Feds are that incompetent but I do believe ABC is not telling the whole story in this case. Just another MSM get the feds story.
"To put a tail on him, perhaps?"
Then you would think you wouldn't announce it to the press....
Thats what they say...Of course they say they dont know where he is...what are they supposed to say...
"We know where he is but were not getting him yet"
If they say they dont know where he is, but they actully do, they can track him.
" Or step into any local Mosque and walk away with nitrates."
There has got to be more to this... why would they test 5 times between the heel and soul anyway... Wouldn't they test somewhere else first before they take his shoe apart?
I'm also curious as to how it resembled the shoe bomber's shoes... did it have a fuse coming out of it?
Best bet: This was an Al Quaida test to see if we would catch TATP completely encased in leather. Who knows how many tests they might do before a big attack.
I think they dont know where he is..they are that incompetent.
I bet a pound of bacon wouldn't pass the sniff test! Or is bacon preserved with nitrItes?
Explosive bacon....it's a gas!
