Hecklers Cause Coulter to Cut UConn Speech

STORRS, Conn. - Conservative columnist Ann Coulter gave up trying to finish a speech at the University of Connecticut on Wednesday night when boos and jeers from the audience became overwhelming. Coulter cut off the talk after 15 minutes and instead held a half-hour question-and-answer session.

"I love to engage in repartee with people who are stupider than I am," Coulter told the 2,600 people at Jorgensen Auditorium.

Coulter's appearance prompted protests from several groups, including Students Against Hate and the Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center. They criticized her for spreading a message of hate and intolerance.

Nearly 100 students gathered inside the Student Union for a rally against Coulter. About a half-dozen people held protest signs outside the auditorium.

After a book signing following her appearance, Coulter called the audience's reaction "typical."

Coulter, originally from New Canaan, Conn., has a history of bashing Democrats in best-selling books, frequent television appearances and speeches. Harding University in Arkansas dropped her from its lecture series in September, citing her abrasive image.

Last April, the president of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota denounced a speech on the campus by Coulter, calling it hateful. In October 2004, University of Arizona police arrested two men who ran on stage and threw custard pies at Coulter; one of the pies glanced off her shoulder.

In her speech at UConn, Coulter called Bill Clinton an "executive buffoon" who won the presidency only because Ross Perot took 19 percent of the vote. She called California Sen. Barbara Boxer a good candidate for the Democrats because "she is a woman and she's learning disabled."

During the question-and-answer session, someone asked Coulter if she really was against a woman's right to vote.

"Not having women vote is a joke," she said, reversing comments she has previously made.

Eric Knudsen, a 19-year-old sophomore journalism and social welfare major at UConn, didn't attend the speech.

"We encourage diverse opinion at UConn, but this is blatant hate speech," said Knudsen, head of Students Against Hate.

Kareem Mohni, a 20-year-old junior and a member of a campus Republicans group, said he was disgusted with the Jorgensen crowd.

"It really appalled me that we're not able to come together as a group and listen to a different view in a respectful environment," he said.

And then it will be "We'll decide who is worthy to live."

Domestic enemies like democrats and liberals have already determined that the unborn are "unworthy to live".

Whether Ann Coulter or any other conservative can speak on a college campus without the threat of disruption on the part of Red Guard wannabes is an issue that must be settled. This has been a problem since the 1960s, as others who have related the experiences of conservatives like William Buckley, Al Capp, and John Wayne during the Vietnam era. One route would be to use the same tactics against Cindy Sheehan, Michael Moore, and other leftists. However, that brings us down to their level, and creates a Weimar Republic atmosphere, where Nazi and Communist/Socialist thugs used violence against their respective opponents' meetings. Additionally, college towns are enemy territory. There are far more brainwashed leftist scum than real Americans in such places.

Colleges, especially state-run colleges, should be compelled to provide security sufficient to protect campus speakers and vigorously prosecute disrupters. Conservative legal advocacy groups need to take colleges like the University of Connecticut, to court for failure to protect the First Amendment rights of Ann Coulter and those who wanted to hear what she had to say. University administrators may not want to protect the freedom of speech for conservatives, but they fear expensive lawsuits.

"We encourage diverse opinion at UConn, but this is blatant hate speech," said Knudsen, head of Students Against Hate.

Knucklehead Knudsen later went on to explain the term "diverse". It means dumacrats who think Bill Clinton is the greatest American that ever lived and dumacrats who think Ted Kennedy is the greatest American that ever lived.

They'd have booed H.L. Menken, Mark Twain, and a whole host of writer/speakers whose ideas, whether you agreed with them or not, made people think. That's the point. Liberals are terrified of real ideas. They can't argue the merits of their own stances on anything, so it's back to ad hominem attacks -- the last refuge of scoundrels and all that.

"So, telling the truth about democrats is now called 'bashing'?

The truth is the democrats can't handle the truth."

This is evident in a dem/liberal's self-loathing and perpetual unhappiness. They espouse socialist/communist philosophies and embrace socialist/communist values, but they can not stand to be called a socialist or communist. Note how they react the next time you call them one, or even refer to their ideas as such in the course of conversation. They will say something straight from Marx/Engels, i.e., "Nobody should make more than a million a year, and if they do, anything over that should go to the poor."

When you state that what they are suggesting is a purely communist ideal and is the kind of thinking that promotes class warfare, YOU will be accused of getting off point, throwing labels around, and making a personal attack by calling them names like socialist.

I try not to waste my breath speaking to such people unless there is somehat of an audience present with persons who may see the light.

She called California Sen. Barbara Boxer a good candidate for the Democrats because "she is a woman and she's learning disabled."

This is true. Boxer (and Pelosi) are clueless.

If a liberal says something that anyone with the slightest brainwave activity would find offensive, journalists find that to be 'nuanced' and not worthy of discussing further. This is how that babbling idiot Howard Dean has skated by this long.

Or they use the other fallback of 'it was taken out of context' defense! And get away with it!

They criticized her for spreading a message of hate and intolerance.

How would they know? They heckled her into silence! But SHE'S the one inciting "hate" and "intolerance."

It must be odd living in a world that depends on the contradiction of observable phenomena.

[bad kitty, bad kitty]

After waiting with her bodyguard on stage for several minutes for the music to stop while a section of the audience chanted "You suck, you suck,"
...
Just before the event, Students Against Hate held an alternative event focusing on discrimination at UConn and intended to provide "balance" to the Coulter talk. During the talk several students from various racial groups and of various sexual orientations spoke about how harsh words have wounded them.

Surely you don't mean words like, "You suck, you suck,"

Just realize, and help your friends realize, that the quality and slant of the reporting they saw here from the LSM, is similar on other stories, about which they do not have first-hand information.

Scary, but true.

Saying the obvious - that it was a joke - is "reversing comments"?

Ann Coulter - intelligence, beauty, quick wit, and the courage to express her conservative opinions in public. Quite an admirable lady, in my book.
