Some Dare Call it Treason
National Ledger ^ | Dec 7, 2005 | JB Williams

Like so many other old ideas, the concept of treason seems to have lost its usefulness in today’s American society of social creature comforts and lofty “love thy enemy more than thy country” precepts. It’s almost treasonous to accuse anyone of treason today.

But have some stretched the boundaries of honest dissent and strayed into treasonous territory for the sake of political gain?

An “intention to betray” is defined by Webster’s this way; “to give aid or information to an enemy; to deliver into the hands of an enemy in violation of a trust or allegiance; to be false or disloyal; to divulge in a breach of confidence.”

Only had to read this far to understand that Dean, Durbin, Kennedy and Kerry are lucky that it is not 1943.

This is a no win for the administration to go after- the only way they can nail Rockerfeller is to say the he was gving out informatiuon he should not have and that would mean admitting that what Rockefeller said was true - that the poresident had decided to go to war much earlier than he has claimed..

There is no way to win this so I predict the administration will have no interist in presuing this.

I think the Wash. Post meets the 4 criteria for treason by exposing the CIA prisons overseas.

"So even for Bush and those very American republicans... It's just about the politics?"

It' more than just politics - the President cannot, in good conscience do anything that would undermine the war effort and an admission that he made decision long before he has said would really raise a lot of needless questions about why.

Frankly, Rockefeller is harming the war effort by bringing it up this much.

I'll second that... But I want the CIA employee who leaked the story....and the US congressman who dumped it to the reporter the same day Reid closed the senate...

Sounds damned if you do, damned if you don't, and not just politically. In order to not undermine the war effort, Bush needs to sit quietly as others do?

On the issue of Rockefeller's trip I think the administration will choose to not make a big deal out of. On other issues they are taking a more aggressive position.

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe you wait until after the war to file such charges. Right now I would think the admin is concentrating on winning the war. They can get the Rats later.

Treason prosecutions have been very, very rare throughout American history.
