Passenger killed by air marshal
An American Airlines passenger who claimed to be carrying a bomb was shot and killed by an air marshal while trying to flee a plane arriving from Medellin, Colombia, at Miami International Airport on Wednesday, U.S. officials said.
"Shots were fired as the team attempted to subdue the subject," a U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesman said.
The passenger was a 44-year-old U.S. citizen, the spokesman said.
A law enforcement official said "no device has been located at this time."
The incident took place as American Airlines flight 924 arrived from Medellin for a stopover in Miami en route to Orlando, Florida.
The DHS spokesman said the passenger indicated during the flight that there was a bomb in a carry-on bag and upon landing immediately exited the aircraft through the jetway ramp at Gate D42. Air marshals pursued and ordered the passenger to get down on the ground.
"The passenger then reached into his carry-on bag, at which point, consistent with air marshal training, the air marshals took the appropriate actions. Shots were fired as the team attempted to subdue the subject," the spokesman said.
American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith confirmed: "There was an incident on the jet bridge on one of our aircraft in Miami."
The flight, a Boeing 757, arrived from Medellin, at 12:16 p.m. (1716 GMT).The flight was due to leave for Orlando at 2:18 p.m. (1918 GMT).
This was thought to be the first time an air marshal has fired weapon on or near a plane, said Joseph Gutheinz, a former military pilot and attorney who has worked in aviation security.
"I believe this is the first time they've ever discharged a weapon. I am 100 percent sure they have never had an incident like this before," he said.
A Miami International Airport spokesman said Concourse D had been evacuated but the incident did not affect incoming or outgoing flights. It was reopened shortly after 3 p.m. (2000
GMT).

If you're mad as a hatter, don't get on a US plane. We're not messing around anymore.
Followed with "Unarmed mentally disturbed father of two, shot dead by air marshall! Family in shock!"
Perp flew from Quito, Ecuador, to Miami this morning, according to the Feds. Said he had a bomb, turns out he was lying. No bomb found.
He had already landed from Quito, cleared customs, and had boarded another plane for Orlando when he got in an argument with his wife, grabbed his carryon and ran down the aisle yelling he had a bomb. The Air Marshalls followed him out into the jetway.
There you go using common sense to a media idjit that thinks he knows everything.
Why not, "I'm a purple capon prancing merrily?" or "Who's your daddy?" Why reference explosives? These are law enforcement, not shrinks.
Kum-bay-ya.
Do Democrats think Miami air marshals lied?
This is a rundown of what happened at the Miami Airport on Wednesday:
A man aboard an American Airlines flight from Colombia:
1. Claimed he had a bomb.
2. Made threatening statements and exhibited erratic behavior.
3. Refused to comply with numerous and repeated demands to stop.
Authorities determined that:
1. The man posed a mortal threat to those around him.
2. The man refused to comply with their demands to disarm.
As a result, the man was shot and killed. This lessened and perhaps ended the threat against those on the plane. Future threats from others may have also been discouraged.
As it turned out, the man didnt have a bomb, but those whose job it is to know believed that he could have. They judged that the mans statements and actions posed too great a threat to take a chance especially in a post-9/11 world. The air marshals launched a pre-emptive strike against a threat based on the best information available.
Howard Dean, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have not yet issued statements.
Just right! It's more SLANTED and biased news reporting making fun of our first line security troops...it's so wrong.
Congressional Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi demanded that clairvoiants be employed in each terminal to read the minds of incoming bomber suspects. "San Fransisco has plenty of mind-readers who can help the TSA," Pelosi claimed, "and I know they could use the work."
I have NO clue why anybody would speak the word B O M B anywhere NEAR an airport, do you?
The lesson is when an armed Air Marshal orders you to do something, you'd better do it!
Another consideration is that a Latin American would pronounce it with an accent, sounding something like (correct me if I'm wrong)
Now, why interpret that as "I have a bomb" and not a rare copy of Barry Mann's classic single?
Who put the bomp in the bomp bomp bomp bomp bomp
Who put a drain on the aero-aero-airplane
Who got blown to bit bit bit bit bits
Who was the dip who got rip rip rip rip ripped?
Who was that man?
You cannot shake his hand
He got taken out by air security.
Note to self:
Do not yell "I have a bomb" when in an airport.
You can bet that if the idiot HAD a bomb, and law enforcement didn't stop him, the headline would read something like "Keystone cops fail to stop suicide bomber, hundreds dead".
Damned if they do, damned if they don't. I'm just amazed (and thankful) anyone still WANTS to be a cop.
I have not been on line for a day or two. What I fun I have missed. Doing my comparative reading on you peoples behalf I just went to DUmmieland to see what they are saying about the shooting There are many stories posted and this one was just the first:

According to these peoples postings thie incident was even a staged event to distrct people from the Dem response to Pres. Bush's criticism of cut & run statements. LOL! Scrolling down from this story and reading others you get more and more of the same. LOL! Even that air marshalls should b e trained to take in a persons mental condition. Last but not least......the feds stole his meds beforehand. LOL! LOL!
But I gotta thank the DUmmies. I was off line becuase I am not feeling well. But laughter is indeed the best medicine.
You most likely had the dreaded AVL in the same brief case!
lol
