A pack of furious squirrels attacked a stray dog and tore it to shreds in Russia's Far East. The incident occurred in the center of the settlement of Lazo in the Dalnerechensky District. black squirrel
Three locals walking in a park were witnesses of the incident. They say the stray dog was barking at black squirrels jumping from one tree to another. Then the squirrels grouped and suddenly attacked the mongrel.
The witnesses said the squirrels fiercely eviscerated the dog. When the people rushed to rescue the dog it was too late. The fight between the dog and the squirrels lasted for not longer than a minute. When the triumphant squirrels saw the humans approaching, they scattered carrying pieces of the prey in their mouths.
The incident made locals incredibly cautious and people now prefer to pass the park by and do not let children play there. People fear that savage squirrels may attack someone again. One of the locals says that if another accident occured there it would make sense to fix traps in the forest to catch squirrels.
Squirrels have little cones to eat this year. Usually, squirrels lived in the woods only but this year they have come to live right in the center of the settlement.
Mikhail Tiunov from the Far East Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences says he has never heard about squirrel attacking other animals before. "This sounds nonsensical that squirrels attacked a stray dog and tore it to pieces. If this actually happened, the life of squirrels in the forest seems to be really hard this year. It is typical of squirrels to feed on nuts, seeds and mushrooms. And it is unlikely that squirrels have become so aggressive as a result of some mutation," Newsru quoted the expert as saying.
You say that, but perhaps the most vile and disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life is a video that shows a cat being torn to shreds by swarming mice...

My cat and one of the tree squirrels surprised each other in the yard last summer. They were both frozen about two feet apart, neither moving a muscle, for a long time, then the cat backed off.
Our cat (RIP, alas) had an arch-enemy squirrel.
They hated each other.
When our cat was hit by a car chasing him from our pecan tree to the neighbors, I bought a pellet gun and killed the damn rodent.
It just seemed the thing to do.
It's fairly common, and fairly predictable. They nest in tall grass, in marshes and meadows. The males, and possibly the females as well (after the eggs hatch) will perch in small trees, cattails, or similar spots overlooking the nest. Get within a critical radius of about 20 feet, and they'll let you know they aren't too happy about it. The 'attack' consists of hovering 5-10 ft over your head, screeching, and occasionally diving to within 2 feet or so.
Ok, but this wouldn't have happened if that was a firearms dog.
It never is, except baby voles. Little round furry things like marbles with eyes, they haven't yet learned to hide, but they will bite.
Our cat caught and ate an adult squirrel. Took him two days to finish up.

I had a dog when I was a boy. He was half basset hound and half dinosaur. 85 lbs. of dog built real low to the ground. A canine battering ram. Squirrel was one of his favorite take-out meals.
A pack of mooses would be thunderous and prolly hungry.

I had a husky dog that would instantly go for the kill if any squirrel came within leaping distance. Saw him jump six feet straight up, after the squirrel jumped, and pick that squirrel right out of the air. The dog would jump up on top of the car to take a nap or keep a lookout for squirrels. I think it was a dog; too small for a wolf.
