NAACP Asks Governor To Grant 'Tookie' Clemency
NBC 4 (Los Angeles) ^ | UPDATED: 11:57 am PST December 6, 2005 | Staff

LOS ANGELES -- Saying he and convicted killer Stanley "Tookie" Williams can become "a powerful force for change," the national leader of the NAACP Tuesday asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to grant Williams clemency.

Williams, the 51-year-old co-founder of the Crips gang, was convicted and sentenced to death in 1981 for the deaths of four people in two separate Southland robberies. He is scheduled to be executed Dec. 13.

However, in a rally with local and state NAACP chapter members on the south lawn of City Hall, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People President Bruce Gordon said he was convinced after a recent meeting with Williams at San Quentin Prison that executing him would be a mistake.

"He is our secret weapon to help young African-Americans avoid gangs," Gordon said. "We want to save his life so he can save the lives of others."

A vote for clemency is a vote for hope, Gordon said.

Asked whether he believes Williams' claims of innocence, Gordon said he was persuaded by the convicted killer's demeanor during their meeting.

"As I looked into Stanley's eyes I think I spoke to an honest man," Gordon said.

Gordon scoffed at suggestions the NAACP might be lenient on crime.

"We're not soft on crime, this is a war on crime," Gordon said.

Actor Mike Farrell and Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who also spoke at the rally, called for a moratorium on the death penalty in California until the Legislature can assess its fairness.

Farrell also said too many people are in prison for crimes they did not commit.

"We can't afford to make these kinds of mistakes with the lives of human beings," Farrell said.

Bonnie Williams Taylor, Williams' ex-wife, told the gathering that many injustices occurred during Williams' trial.

She said her heart goes out to the families of the victims, but her ex-husband still denies killing anyone.

Alice Huffman, the NAACP's statewide president, said the group is not asking for Williams' release from prison.

"This is a not a free-Tookie rally, it's a rally to save his life," she said.

The NAACP members are making three other stops today in San Diego, Sacramento and San Francisco to hold similar rallies.

Hey Mike...

"Donald Beardslee was convicted of First Degree Murder in the deaths of two young women, Patty Geddling and Stacie Benjamin, on April 25, 1981, in an apparent drug-related murder. At the time of the murders, Beardslee was on parole for murder in Missouri. "

Where was your voice when Beardslee took his needle on January 1, 2005? Oh, that's right.. you don't care because it's only fashionalbe to champion the Black killer. The White guy must be guilty.

He has probably saved more lives than he took.

"Probably ..."

They want him saved based on the pretty much sure bet that he will continue his anti-gang work.

"Pretty much sure bet ..."

It isn't PROBABLE or PRETTY MUCH SURE that he killed four people. What he has done since is irrelevant. He's had 25 years to redeem himself. If the execution had been carried out in due order, he wouldn't have had a lifetime he took away from his victims. And his gang associations "probably" ruined as many lives as any he's "saved" since, it's a pretty much sure bet.

I want the punishment that due process has set for this guy. OTOH, it would suck to lose an effective anti-gang crusader.

That's a risk I'm willing to take. Kill the puke.

We will see what Arnold is made of. I hope I'm wrong but my feeling is he'll commute the death sentence. If there was ever a guy who should fry it's this mutt Tookie.

Arnold's refused to commute two other death sentences, I believe, so I certainly hope he keeps to it.

Too bad Williams didn't get convicted in Texas where, as Ron White puts it, "they've built an express lane!"

Excuse me, but how many people have been killed by the Crips, particularly in their conflict with the Bloods? And could you please explain to me how this advances black people?

There was a trial and multiple appeals...all said he was guilty....the NAACP should want to abide by the rule of law, depend on the jury and courts, and not try to manipulate the justice system by saying he was innocent......

What should we do now? Have the NAACP decide who is guilty or not insteaed of the courts?

When I am shown the results of the polygraph that suggest a high probability that he is telling the truth, I'll back clemency.

When a man kills 4 people then, through the passing of time and the support of the black community, he becomes an icon for peace, he MUST be held accountable regardless. In California that means death for Tookie.

I heard the jailers say that he is a PR master manipulator. I can just picture him, 13 years ago, sitting in his cell and thinking to himself "I better re-invent myself" before the pill drops into the bucket.

So, he sets out to "write" some kids books (I heard he didn't actually write them since he's mentally retarded or mentally deficient or something) and sends out a courier pigeon to make some truces between warring gangs.

Some CRIPS members emphatically state that Tookier NEVER WAS the co-coordinator of the gang........that he just stated he was long enough for it to stick. You know.........tactics the democraps use all the time. Lie and keep lying until people believe you.

Larry Elder states the truces never stuck and L.A. is curiously STILL the gang capital of the country. Tookie is a violent street thug who learned early on how to lie and cheat and kill and manipuate and who has only self imposed importance which the ignorant black community looks to for their newest hero, and Hollywood bangs a rythmic drug to. Disgusting...

Tookie mocked the gurgling, gasping sounds of one of his victims. Tookie mocked the gurgling, gasping death rattles of one of his victims, Tookie mocked and laughed at the gurgling, gasping, rasping death sounds of one of his victims. Don't forget that.

I read an article today and the brother said he is against the death penalty in most cases. And he would be against the death penalty in Tookie's case if Tookie would sign a contract to drop all of his appeals.

Since it is the stated position of Tookie and his journalist girlfriend that they will work night and day to free Tookie, I think that means the brother is for the death penalty in Tookie's case.

It is time to recall exactly what Tookie did to get himself sentenced to death:

In 1979 "Tookie" murdered four innocent, defenseless people with a sawed-off shotgun at point blank range. During his first murder he ordered a 7-eleven store clerk into the back room and told him to "lie face down on the floor you mother----er." He then walked over to this young man and shot him in the back at contact range with the shotgun. The rush of blood into the victims lungs and throat made a horrible gurgling sound and the man struggled to breathe. "Tookie" then fired another killing round into the man's back -- again at contact range. Later that evening, while eating a hamburger, he bragged about the murder and laughed while recalling the agony, gurgling sounds and the desperate gasping of the victim.

Eleven days later "Tookie" broke into a small motel at 5:30 in the morning. When confronted by the owner he shot the man point blank in the face with the same shotgun. He broke into the owners' bedroom and shot and murdered his wife at point blank range with the shotgun. When their daughter came running to their rescue he shot and brutally killed their only daughter with the shotgun. Then he calmly raided the cash register and drove away with a hundred dollars -- the only receipts for the evening.

Tookie was convicted of murder and sentenced to death for these wanton, brutal acts of murder. During the sentencing phase of his trial he looked over to the jury and mouthed "I will get everyone of you mother----ers."

This heroic jury did not flinch. They at great personal risk to themselves and their families meted out a "guilty" verdict even though the leader of the most notorious gang in America with thousands of gang members to do his bidding threatened to ..."get everyone of you mother----ers."

Tookie Williams has never been remorseful, he has never apologized to the families of his victims, he refuses to accept responsibility for his actions. He still claims to be an innocent man, framed and convicted by an all white jury. This is a blatant lie that Tookie Williams repeated last week on the MSNBC Rita Crosby interview. (There was a black and a latino on the jury.) The jury members still live in fear of this wanton, unrepentant monster. It is time for this man to quit threatening society.

Tookie is not a victim. The real victims are like that freckled-face young man, with a ready smile for everyone, working at that 7-eleven store when Tookie Williams walked in 26 years ago. Tookie Williams smote the life out of that young man, Albert Owens, and his mother has been gasping for closure ever since. She has been horribly injured, her pain is too great to bear, the cuts to her heart are too deep, and her wounds will never heal.

Tookie does not deserve to be rewarded with clemency. He deserves to be punished.

As long as we are saving killers, why don't we enlist the help of Charles Manson to talk to elementary students and tell them how being a killer is not the right thing to do with their lives. Maybe Manson, Tookie and Saddam can go on tour together. Also we can have the weirdo sex offenders preach about the evils of child molestation. I say kill them all.

Actually Tookie's never been let into the population where 90% of death row inmates live because he's TOO DANGEROUS and is known to issue orders to gang members from his cell.

He's evil.

Oh and Snoop Dog? He's got a new CD coming out. On Dec 13, the day Tookie is put to death.
