CHICAGO, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- A new regulation advocated by the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission may change the way cable network providers price services -- leading some to offer programming on an a la carte basis and enabling consumers to choose exactly the kind of programming they want delivered, experts tell United Press International's Networking.
The policy proposal, for so-called a la carte programming, is designed by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, an appointee of President Bush, to drive down the pricing of cable packages and improve programming content. By Gene Koprowski

Meaning: higher prices for cable subscribers, no doubt.
Good-bye CNN et al...
Cable TV doesn't go over the airwaves. What is the FCC doing regulating ANY aspect of Cable TV, let alone how they structure their pricing?
good G_d almighty. In my lifetime? I just want news/sports and the weather channel. Maybe military history. This would be too logical.
Precisely my question. Why is it the government's business?
Just knowing that I would no longer be subsidizing garbage like MTV, Logo, Sundance, and BET would be enough for me. Right now that slop is subject to parental filtering so no one accidentally stumbles onto it.
In order to get a la carte you'll have to change how the cable channels charge the cable companies first, it's all trickle down from there.
Sitting in a CATV NOC right now I agree with you it would take a complete restructure of the business and the way we receive channels and pay the programmer for them before we could ever go ala carte.
I'm sure we won't get subsidized for that nor do we really want to be.
CATV Co's are the next Wal-Mart for the left to hate.
I really hope they do this. I can ditch CNN, MTV, Oh!, etc, etc, and trade them in for History Int'l, OLN, Military, etc.....i.e. I can dith the ones that aren't worth having and get the ones that I want.
Agreed! Why do the believe they have the right?
The only time the FCC should be involved is if the cable company's cable is leaking. Doubt they should even be involved in content.
Bilious Leftist Rant of the Day
Liberals: a never ending source of entertainment:
In a comment about a cable industry proposal to allow viewers to pay only for the shows they actually watch, we see that special brand of tolerance and love weve come to expect from the deranged left; at The Smirking Chimp, of course. Like their jihadi allies, the American Left can turn anything into a reason to rant, no matter how stupid it might seem to the rest of us. The psychology of the leftists is explained by Tammy Bruce (former leftist herself) in this interview: link: 251 comments
Unfortuntely all of the ESPN fans will fight this because they like the rest of us subsidizing their ESPN.
Have to admit that I watch CNN every once in a while.... when there is a fair/balanced debate.
Like to see Liberals "get theirs."
Fun to see a liberal start ranting sound bites and then be effectively countered with facts.
I've often wondered why I should have to pay for programming in languages I can't understand/have no wish to learn.
What's wrong with consumer choice? It would be like going to a store and having to buy a bundle of products to get the one or two things you really want.
I can't wait for IPTV so that we can say bye-bye to our friends at the cable companies.
But what about Lifetime and WE? How will we ever learn about how terrible men are and see Valarie Berteneli in a role that will shock you?
I would love not having to pay for CNN, MTV, Lifetime, Oxygen, and all the other lefty/dirty channels included in our package. We watch about 12 channels, and it is only right that we shouldn't have to pay for the 100 we never watch.
