More Iraqis look to vote secular Dec. 15

SECULAR VOICE: Tired of sectarian violence, more Iraqis appear to be turning to secular parties like the one led by former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.

More Iraqis look to vote secular Dec. 15. Many see the nonsectarian parties as the best alternative for a unified and stable Iraq.

Like Ali, more Iraqis appear to be turning to one of the Dec. 15 election's secular parties as the best alternative for a unified and stable Iraq. Mostly it's better educated Iraqis or those from smaller ethnic groups who are making this choice, so their prospects for equaling the voting power of Iraqis following the electoral directives of religious leaders remains unclear.

But some of Iraq's top leaders say that the single most important choice Iraqis will make in the December vote will be between a secular and modernizing government and a religious-based one. The fact that Iraqis will be choosing their first permanent four-year government since Saddam Hussein's fall only adds to the significance, they say.

"This contest between the secular and religious visions of government is really the main choice to be made," says Adnan Pachachi, a prominent Sunni statesman who has joined Mr. Allawi's Iraqi National list. "It won't be decided in one election, but it is a basic choice between an open and progressive Iraq and one that is backward and continues to fall behind."

Looks like the Iraqis "get it".

I hope the actual vote will be fore the secular government, which will be a major blow to the terrorists, and IRAN, which has been trying to influence Iraq by supporting the terrorists and the religious parties.

Excellent news, if true. What is really needed there is the overcoming [or erasure] of religious and tribal identities - an extremely tall order.

Presumably they have been talking with Iraqis, and more Sunnis are registering to vote also.

It's worth reading the entire article, it has more info about the situation and the dynamics.

Thanks, I read the article before I asked the question. It is not clear that it is not anything more than an impression of the reporter.

I just read another article which is relevant -- apparently the US and the Iraqi government is doing an "outreach program", trying to bring the Iraqis together, while working on defeating the terrorists and foreign fighters.

"We're focused on the terrorists and foreign fighters because they are the ones conducting the most horrific attacks and are the most ruthless in the pursuit of their objective, which is to derail the democratic process and discredit the Iraqi government," he said at the end of a week in which at least 22 American service members have died in Iraq, including 10 Marines killed Thursday in a roadside bombing.

Lynch's job with the Multinational Force-Iraq is to work on big picture issues such as Sunni outreach, economic development, election logistics and media relations. His office is in the U.S. Embassy and he works closely with coalition diplomats and Iraqi officials.

They had to get that in, didn't they?

These people absolutely, positively cannot let any report go without mentioning that Americans were DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD this week. I hate these traitors.

The MSM did the same thing about the good news, that suicide bombings were at a 7 months low!

The reported it in the first few lines, then spent the remaining 80% of the article harping on the negatives.
