Defense Secretary Joe Lieberman?

Will Sen. Joseph Lieberman be tapped next year to become Secretary of Defense as a reward for his support for the Iraq war?

That's the prediction from former New Republic magazine editor Andrew Sullivan, who told NBC's "Chris Matthews Show" on Sunday: "Before the next congressional elections, Joe Lieberman will be asked to be Secretary of Defense to succeed Don Rumsfeld."

"That's the back story behind Lieberman's amazing defense of the administration this week," Sullivan insisted.

Asked if he thought the Connecticut Democrat would accept the appointment, Sullivan said: "I don't know - it depends on how things are going in Iraq. But I think he's being lined up."

On Tuesday, Lieberman confounded war critics within his own party with a stunning editorial in the Wall Street Journal arguing that the Iraq war is being won.

"Progress is visible and practical," Lieberman wrote upon returning from his fourth trip to the war zone.

"People are working their way toward a functioning society and economy in the midst of a very brutal, inhumane, sustained terrorist war against the civilian population and the Iraqi and American military there to protect it," he explained.

Lieberman also endorsed the Bush administration contention that the Iraq war has made America safer, warning: "If the terrorists win, they will be emboldened to strike us directly again and to further undermine the growing stability and progress in the Middle East."

Lieberman won't be appointed to replace Rumsfeld, then the liberal kooks will say "See, Jewish Zionist in charge of American military"!.

Lieberman might become an independent.

I don't see Rummy going anywhere either, but Bush and Lieberman like eachother. Whenever the President is in his presence is public, he gives him a big bear hug.

Not so long ago, Lieberman would fit into a party which had Scoop Jackson as its leading foreign policy/defense spokesman. The party changed, Not Joe.

Holy smokes, I totally mis-processed the first part of your first sentence. I thought it read: "I am the only one who..." and so my "No, you're not" response was not doubting the fact that you're a vet. My apologies!

Up until he became Algore's running mate, I basically liked Lieberman. I still respect his support in the WOT; however, I DO NOT want to see him in a position where he has a hand in making policy.

I agree with your assessment of Lieberman -- except for his taking the VP slot with Gore and then throwing all his noble convictions aside to accommodate that dolt (disavowing the need for Social Security reform, etc.)... And there was the time just before impeachment when Joe got up in the Senate and started to go after Bubba but then let him off the hook with a slap on the wrist -- that was when he really could have made a difference but really weaseled out.

But the WSJ piece was a wonderful and corageous statement -- makes many of the GOP senators look like the weasels they are (Senator Warner, are you reading this???). Maybe Joe would like to have another chance at being on a national ticket... but perhaps on the GOP side this time.

Rummy is mean to the press. It's funny and entertaining to watch his press meetings.

You are not alone on that one.
Old Joe sure showed a different side to himself in 2000
with his buddy Internet Algore.

He's not to be trusted, he IS just another lib....

> I really don't think that Rummy is going anywhere.

By mid 2007 the current AQ #3000 will be #3 due to the constant attrition of terrorist ranks by U.S. forces. AQ jihadies now get 1/72nd share of a virgin due to severe supply shortages. Rummy appoints hand picked replacement to run DOD so he can get out on the campaign trail for the race for the Presidency.

Rumsfeld, Rice in 2008!

You know, Lieberman's good because he's a liberal who can have an honest and reasonable debate with others, but the point remains that he's a liberal.

I don't see him becoming defense secretary.

No. Rummy should be there for 10 more years.

The chances of a sitting Senator, leaving office to serve the other party, for only two years, approaches zero.

No.

Senator Lieberman has a political power base which is in place because of the DNC.

Why would he give it up and start from scratch in acquiring such a base again?

While I would love to see Rummy elected president, I am also enough of a realist to know that there is absolutely ZERO CHANCE of him ever being elected.

I also hope that the GOP is pragmatic enough to realize that they need to field a candidate who can win (I don't think anyone could have beat BJ Klintoon in 96, but I knew from the start that Dole never had a chance). I think the nominee will be George Allen with either Condi Rice or Rudy Guiliani as his running mate.

I'm with you on never forgetting LIEberman's willingness to throw ALL of his long held beliefs overboard for a chance to run with albore.

Then he acquiesced in the attempt to disenfranchise the military ballots in Florida.

He's for this war because it helped Israel and no other reason.

I have no respect for LIEberman at all.

Wasn't that long ago I heard him speaking to a group of jewish people and he remarked again tht the 2000 election was stolen.

I agree. He supports the war because most Jews support the war. For them, it is common sense!

Not after Lieberman helped Algore try to steal military votes.

Why would a safe US Senator give up his seat for a couple of years as SOD for a lame duck President even under the best of circumstances?

Any many libs hate the war for the same reason. It's good for Israel so it's bad for the anti semitic left.
