The disturbing thing are the churches and "Christians" who back this wicked event...I certainly do not wish harm or harbor a prejudice against gays but this marriage thing "just ain't right"

They themselves are baffled by the Press pressure, and wonder if it is propeganda by Fundies designed to create a backlash. As others have posted, there are existing legal arrangements to leave legacies to parnters..or one's goldfish, or cat, etc..etc. Therefore the biggest excuse given is simply a red herring.
