The columnist argues that the "dreadful" Iraq war "diminishes the joy of the Christmas season," and that "talk-radio land and the Internet blogosphere," should stop complaining that "Have a nice holiday," or "Happy holidays" or "Enjoy your holiday" are "part of a campaign to take God and Jesus out of Christmas."
He argues that Christians shouldn't be offended and speculates that non-Christians aren't as easily offended if you wish them "Merry Christmas."
However, he also claims that saying "Happy Holidays" is a matter of politeness to non-Christians and as "a courtesy."
Finally, the author insinuates that Christians are responsible for the commercialization of Christmas and concludes it is "far too soon" to be wishing people "Merry Christmas" anyway.

I said: Happy Holidays" became un-Christian when it became offensive to the politically correct to use "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays" interchangeably.
Note the emphasis on who is being offended here, and why. Most Americans do use Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas interchangeably. It is only recently that there has been a resurgence of political correctness that insists that "Happy Holidays" be used on the basis that "Merry Christmas" has religious connections. This is an overtly anti-Christian interpretation, because, as you say, most Americans don't have a problem with Christmas being associated with the holiday season that falls between Thanksgiving and New Years, or vice versa.
The majority of the floats in the parade last night, rgardless of who's float it was, is towed by a piece of fire equipment from one of the many Volunteer Fire Departments in the area. There was actually fire companies from 3 states participating last night.
I love living in a rural, non PC area. There is plenty of the typical Santa, reindeer, etc. type lights and decorations everywhere, but the reliigious nature of the season is also extremely well represented, not only by the churches and private sector, but at retailers and by local governments.
At the "entrance" to another town there is a large lighted Nativity and a Mennorah and a Season's Greeting sign.

Ramadan and Eid may be legitimate but kwanzaa is made up crap.
It became offensive when the word "Christmas" achieved the equal dont-say-in-public status of the "f" word.
We can get back at them and rename all of the Holidays in a neutral sense. So, here we go: Update Calendar Year Day, Celebrate Future Furniture (Arbor Day), Future Roadkill Day (Groundhog Day), Buy Chocolate Today (Valentines Day), Buy More Chocolate and Color Eggs Day (Easter), Visit a Cemetery Day (Memorial), Go See Fireworks Day (Independence), Celebrate Work by Not Working Day (Labor), Racist Ocean Traveller Day (Columbus), Be a Wiccan for a Day (Halloween), Go Back To The Cemetery Again Day (Veterans), Kill Lots of Birds and Eat Them Day (Thanksgiving), and then continue to redefine Christmas. Ridiculous? Yep. But why not redefine them all... why just Christmas? Good Friday is still called that by most people when asked what the significance is to taking that Friday off work.
The PC censors are trying to get Christmas out of the language. I am sending back all the "holiday" cards and letting my suppliers know I celebrate Christmas not holiday.

When "Happy Holidays" started being used as the replacement for those trying to censor the word Christmas from public places.
It's an insult to any religion to verbally euthanize their religious holiday by denying its meaning and relgious basis.
Ironically, this trend only appears on Christmas. You never hear anyone substituting Happy Holiday for Happy Easter.
And I suspect Jews and Muslims would feel uncomfortable if their neighbors wished them a nice Holiday instead of Ramadan or Rosh Hoshana/Yom Kippur.
Labor Day is a holiday. The others are religious observances and the fact that they are celebrated by a work-less day is simply accepting the fact that their religionists will observe them regardless.

The irony of merchants making most of their yearly income from Christmas shoppers while similtaneously refusing to include the word "Christmas" in their advertisements or forbid employees from saying the word is totally lost on these people...
Exactly the way to do it. Everytime we receive a "Happy Holiday" from a clerk in a store, we respond with "Merry Christmas".....They usually smile and return the greeting!
It is not common knowledge what is meant when "Christmas" is said either (Christ-mass).
Hubby and I went to Toys-R-Us yesterday to shop for grandaughter. Checking out, I looked up and saw several signs that said, "DONATE HOLIDAY TOYS for the Toys for Tots". Then the cashier asked: "would you like to donate a holiday toy for the Toys for Tots?" I said, "No. If you were collecting Christams Toys I would donate, but I won't donate for a generic holiday. Merry Christmas!"
