FEDS ASKING TOUGH QUESTIONS OF NOPD: INDICTMENTS PREDICTED XXXX DECEMBER 03, 2005 5:27 PM

**EXCLUSIVE! MUST CREDIT THE DEAD PELICAN!**

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Feds are asking a number of very specific questions of the NOPD, source tell The Dead Pelican. Among the questions that the Feds are asking, one stands out: "Where are all these officers that we were paying you for?"

As reported earlier, it is widely known that NOPD's real troop strength has never been more than approximately 1000 commissioned officers but the "official" number (that is, the number given out by the Superintendent's office) has always been 1500 to 1700.

But The Dead Pelican has learned that the actual numbers are quite different.

The Dead Pelican has learned that the NOPD has been taking Federal money supposedly earmarked for hiring and training officers, and using it for things like overtime for "connected" officers, rather than hiring new officers.

And, of course, there is the "phantom officer" situation, that is, "officers" who drew and cashed paychecks but cannot be found to exist.

So now there is a lingering question: where did the money go? "Something this widespread and blatant can't go on without the Superintendent's knowledge and implied consent," said a source.

Insiders say that indictments are inevitable...

Do we have an extradition treaty with Jamaica?

The former Police Chief, Eddie Compass, didn't follow my advice and move somewhere which has no extradition treaty. Instead, he took a job in private security with a hotel. I'd like to know what kind of idiot actually hired this guy and does that hotel have any towels left?

I would love to see the hard evidence for this. Forged time sheets or fake police rolls on the federal application or something. I've been hearing this for months, but nothing has come from it yet.

Gee, nobody expected THIS when Bill Clinton promised 100,000 more police officers on the streets with federal money in 199x.

Tony Snow commented on this several weeks ago. This is the first I have heard about in since.

"Where are all these officers that we were paying you for?"

YEAH!!!

I was beginning to think Nagin and Compass would skate on this issue. I'm glad to hear somebody is paying attention. Where is the LA State police in this investigation? Were they in on the take, and if not, why are they not looking into this? Surely there must be some state monies being ripped off too.

I would love to see the hard evidence for this.

I think the first 'hard evidence' came when Federal investigators wanted to speak with the mystery officers that didn't show up for work. They were told by Mayor Scumbag that they were on leave at Las Vegas and Atlanta - except no one in Las Vegas or Atlanta ever heard of them. That's when the Feds looked at payroll and rollcalls of officers on duty and found the 600-700 discrepancy in manpower.

Actually, I'd rather know what happened to those two cops who were filmed, blatantly stealing from walmart during the flooding.

Yeah, well that's just the rumor, but I still want to see some HARD evidence or even better some indictments. I want names, dates, and details. I want to know who is dirty and who isn't.

Maybe, just maybe, Louisiana corruption will be the biggest victim of Katrina. The department of justice may not be big enough to take that task on.

If the dead can vote in Chicago, the nonexistent can be cops in New Orleans. What's the problem?
