Officials still searching for Juan Deer By AMY L. DAVILA Valley Morning Star
PORT MANSFIELD, December 3, 2005 Juan Deer remains a fugitive.
After a morning search by game wardens turned up no leads, the six-point buck has become this fishing villages most wanted deer.
Officials are searching for the deer, which was adopted as a fawn by local residents Sally and Tom KenHagen.
We have not found him, but we were looking for him this morning, James Lindsey, a Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden said. We will continue to look again next week for him.
While hes roamed freely around this community of about 400, Juan Deer has matured, become an aggressive Don Juan Deer and a nuisance to some local residents.
Some residents say the deer frightens them while they are walking their dogs because it follows closely behind them. One resident says the deer recently horned his leg, leaving a large bruise, while attempting to get at his Labrador retriever.
Juan became a familiar face in Port Mansfield after the KenHagens began to feed him when he wandered into the village, an apparent orphan.
I tried to take it across the street, but it would always get bit and attacked by other animals, Sally KenHagen said. I hoped it would get adopted by another doe but it didnt, so I sort of took it in.
After a while the familys pit bulldog Molly befriended Juan Deer and KenHagen noticed that the deer took on canine behavior.
It thinks its a dog, KenHagen said. It did hurt someone but it wouldnt kill someone on purpose. I know it is a wild animal but it wants to be with other dogs, not harm anyone intentionally.
Lindsey, the game warden, said he heard several complaints about the once-friendly deer and his developing romance-fueled aggressive tendencies.
Right now we are looking at several avenues to take in this situation, but more will be known once he is captured, he said. When we do finally get him, we have to take a photo and show it to the person that it attacked to make sure that is the same deer. However, as it looks at this point, we are looking more into putting him down.
Although the buck that once posed for pictures with the KenHagens friends has given in to his natural animal instincts, now posing a danger to the community, many feel he should not be killed.
I dont think people here should feed the deer and encourage the large population to come around, Jan Jones, of Port Mansfield, said about Juan Deers situation. It is a wild animal and eventually will become one even if it does like people. However, I dont think they should kill it.
Like KenHagen, Jones said the animal should be tranquilized and taken to a remote location to live out its life with other deer.
It is a deer by nature and even though it has been taken in by people, it will learn to survive, Jones said. That is what wild animals do. Deer were not meant to naturally interact with humans, no matter what.
Fred Orzoco, who works in Port Mansfield, agrees with Jones. He said although Juan Deer has become a threat, he feels it should not be killed.
I feel bad for the deer, said Orozco, who has seen the deer only once. I would like for it to be relocated to another area, but I can understand the concerns (the game wardens) have.
Juan Deers fate has become the subject of a buzz in the community. Some residents understand KenHagens predicament because of Port Mansfields close proximity to wildlife areas.
I had a wild hog once and the hardest decision I had to make was to castrate him because he became too much to handle, Greg Blank said. It is just their instinct to be the alpha male and when they get older it is a touchy subject and hard to have to let them go.
Would you consider him ethnic food?
We have a zoo in Browsville that might take him. I wonder if they checked all the dog houses.
So these two guys are riding a camel instead of owning to work everyday to save money. One day they come out of work and the camel's gone.
A police officer responds to a call and fills out a report. "Are there any distinguishing marks on the camel? Any tattoos or such?"
One guy says, "well, it has a double rectum."
The cop stops writing and looks up. "What do you mean?"
"Well, every day when we ride the camel to work, people will roll down their car windows and say, "HEY! Look at the two a$$hiles on that camel!" "
.30-06's cure this
He probably hopped in the back of someones truck that didn't want him killed.
Check the garage, Senores?
Hmmmmm maybe if the family dog had been a Golden Retriever Juan wouldn't be on the "lamb" right now
Don't check my freezer:)
That is hilarious. Kudos.
I thought the article was about a Mexican riding lawnmower...
Hmmm, I recall an article about a biologist and his son. on vacation in TX, and they spy an antelope by the side of the
road. The guy walks up to the antelope, and is promptly horned on the leg. He bled to death while his son was
frantically calling 911.
Or does "horned" refer to some other protuberance?
A .30-06, used in a timely fashion, might have save the biologist some pain and death.
Of course, they could have just stayed in the car, with it running, and just taken photos.
