LAKEHURST, N.J. (AP) _ John Iannacone _one of the last surviving "sky sailors" from the U.S. Navy's rigid airship program in the 1920s and '30s and a hero of the Hindenburg crash _ is dead at 94.
Iannacone, who survived the Hindenburg's airship crash and rescued passengers during the first seconds of its fire, died early Friday afternoon at Kimball Medical Center in Lakehurst after suffering a heart attack on Thanksgiving. He served in the Navy's aircraft carrier fleet and during World War II hunted German U-boats from blimps.

I live near Lakehurst NAS, and have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Iannacone on several occasions. A very nice man, and an interesting person to talk with. I last saw him two years ago at Lakehurst. They have a ceremony every year on May 6th to commemorate the anniversary of the Hindenburg disaster. I have attended this event several times over the years, and have had the opportunity to hear Mr. Iannacone tell the story of his experience on the fateful evening. Rest in Peace, John.
