WASHINGTON The FBI has reopened an inquiry into one of the most intriguing aspects of the pre-Iraq war intelligence fiasco: how the Bush administration came to rely on forged documents linking Iraq to nuclear weapons materials as part of its justification for the invasion.
The documents inspired intense U.S. interest in the buildup to the war and they led the CIA to send a former ambassador to the African nation of Niger to investigate whether Iraq had sought the materials there. The ambassador, Joseph C. Wilson IV, found little evidence to support such a claim, and the documents were later deemed to have been forged.

The premise of the article is kaka.
how the Bush administration came to rely on forged documents = LIE
Enter our hero, Joseph C. Wilson, from stage left. The French forgery about Niger led straight to Wilsons bogus trip to Africa. Wilson supposedly went there to find out the truth for the CIA. But every government involved already knew the truth about the bogus document, because it showed incorrect names of Niger officials. A single telephone call to Niger would have established that fact.
Ping and a bump to read tomorrow.
Pinz
The media has a vested interest in continuing to promote the big lie about yellow cake in Niger and Wilson's bogus sweet tea drinking trip to Niger.
Good grief, they are STILL pushing this lie? Even after it's been debunked repeatedly?
At least they are now saying that it was the CIA that sent him. One step forward and 2 steps back.
I only hope they are putting as much emphasis on investigating who leaked to the Washington Post about the CIA prisoners in secret locations.

The LA Times tries to lash out at those they think are responsible for their financial death spiral.
I read between the lines that they are going to investigate THE SOURCE of the document. Looks like they tried to bury that fact in a bath of BullHockey. But everything in this article points to an investigation of where the document originated. Which could be VERY interesting indeed. There was some speculation that this document could be linked to the international seditionist leftist groups, such as the democrat party or groups linked to moveon.org.
Look for followups to this story on page A12 below the fold.
"Democrats found someone in the FBI to do their bidding? When will these guys realize their treason is unacceptable"
Not sure. There was an investigation into this matter a couple of years ago. During the Senate investigation into the pre war intelligence, the issue came up surrounding the Wilson trip. Rockefeller asked that no one discuss the issue to prevent interfering with the ongoing FBI investigation. He was successful in getting anything about it omitted from the report.
The Dems managed to bury this for two years.
The L.A. Times continues to deficate in its own nest.
Maybe they'll find out just who signed off on sending Wilson to Niger...
Just last month, the FBI said they were satisfied that documents were forged by Rocco Martino for financial gain.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1515927/posts
But now they want to find out if someone slipped the fakes to Martino? He got them through a break-in at the Niger Embassy in Rome (with a feamle insider who worked at the embassy)he says.
The Left is pointing fingers at everyone, Italian intelligence, French intelligence, US intelligence, Chalibi and saying they used the insider to legitimize the documents.
And Democratic US Senators actually believe them.
Martino was a known forger and he is facing a trial in Italy. Cased closed.
Fall of 2002, sometime after October 9 - A report from the U.S. Navy suggests that uranium being transferred from Niger to Iraq was discovered in a warehouse in Cotonou, Benin. The report indicates that the broker for the deal is willing to talk about it, but, mysteriously he is never contacted by the CIA or military intelligence.
The above is from "Joe Wilson's Lies, A Timeline".
We know that this Navy report reached the CIA because on page 59 of the Senate Report the DO at CIA was asked why this was not investigated. His answer, "no one thought to do that".
UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I have seen something about someone going to a warehouse on November 25,2002, but it was empty. Well duh!
The Senate Report states that we have the name and telephone numbers of this broker, who says that the sale was between the President of Niger and Iraq.
Although Joe Wilson's trip to Niger was in February of 2002, and the Navy report was in October of 2002, this "broker" could confirm that Saddam was indeed seeking yellowcake from Africa.
Where in hell are the FBI and CIA on this, and if they aren't willing, where is ANYONE?
I'm confused. On the face of it, your comment looks damaging to Bush and the U.S. I mean, we knew that the info was fake but we still used it to justify the war? What's the rest of the story?
The folks who will be nervous about the FBI doing additional digging into the forged Niger memo are some in the CIA and the Wilson's.
The forgery is SO obvious that the memos could NOT have been planted by someone who wanted to build support for they war. The forgeries were planted by someone who wanted them to be found faulty...someone who wanted to undermine our war on terror. Of course the LA Times and the MSM will spin it to make it look bad for the administration...just like the media spun Viveca Novak's testimony bad for Rove (and later it was reported the Rove's lawyer wanted her to testify).
I say bring on the investigation.
