Company Blocks Ads Critical of Ohio Rep. (Jean Schmidt)
AP ^ | Dec 2, 5:31 PM EST | DAVID HAMMER

WASHINGTON (AP) -- An advertising company that gives most of its political donations to Republicans blocked the Democratic National Committee from putting up billboards criticizing GOP Rep. Jean Schmidt of Ohio.

Lamar Advertising Co. of Baton Rouge, La., refused to put up two billboards in Portsmouth, Ohio, and another in Cincinnati with a picture of Schmidt and the following message: "Shame on you, Jean Schmidt: Stop attacking veterans. Keep your eye on the ball - we need a real plan for Iraq."

The billboards are the result of 7,000 donations, DNC executive director Tom McMahon said, after Schmidt attacked Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, a Democrat and Marine veteran, for his call for withdrawal from Iraq. Schmidt was booed off the House floor two weeks ago when she said "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."

She has since apologized.

Lamar's Huntington, W.Va., regional manager, Mark Watts, rejected the billboards criticizing Scmidt as a personal attack, said Hal Kinshaw, Lamar's vice president of governmental affairs.

Kilshaw said Lamar doesn't do many billboards for either Republicans or Democrats, but the company does have a political action committee that contributes to candidates. In 2004 elections, it gave Republicans 70 percent of its U.S. House race donations and 60 percent of its U.S. Senate race contributions.

The DNC says it went to Lamar because it controls the market in the area but is looking for other options

Kevin Reilly is head of Lamar Advertising. I believe it was he or his dad who called Louisiana a "banana republic" many years ago!!! Very good conservative family in this state!

seeing the forest through the trees. . .it was not Jean Schmitt calling Rep. Murtha a coward. She was relating that message from a Marine. In effect, the democrats were booing at the Marine.

Isn't it a rule that you can't whine about something once someone has apologized about it?

LOL! Classic lib/'Rat response when asked: "SO, what's YOUR solution????"
"I dunno".

It's intellectual laziness. It's easier to criticize than it is to make some mental effort to consider REALITY and possible solutions.

I cut my parents a lot of slack. They're too old and have lived too long to worry about how scary the real world can be. However ... my ex ... she's intelligent and responsible, but still buys the leftist lies ... she has no excuse. She could indeed be "evil". :-)

Good. This isn't a freedom of speech issue. Perhaps they can find a sewage authority which might allow them to paste their canards on stormdrains.

How the Dems can possibly criticize a woman who did nothing more than state the obvious and quote a GENUINE American Hero, is beyond me.

Murtha is a traitor. He is in the same category as Benedict Arnold, excpet Arnold at least had a couple of victories under his belt.

Everytime Vipers and traitors like Pelosi and Murtha talk about pulling out, it encourages the terrorists in Iraq to try to kill more American soldiers.

If they thought we were going to hang tough and stay there as long as needed, they would be less likely to persue their agenda so vigorously.

As in the Viet Nam War, the same traitors are trying to loose in the arena of public opinion, what so many brave American soldiers, living, dead, and mutilated, have achieved on the battlefield with their courage, sacrifice and blood.

That's not true. The Marine she quoted, Danny Bubp, stated that he never referred to Murtha by name, and would never call a fellow Marine a coward. She can't even take responsibility for her own statements.

"Shame on the republicans who bashed her after she put Murtha in his place. She said what the so called men of the Republican party didn't have the stones to say."

The grown-ups in the party were putting Murtha in his place by refuting his proposal rather than lobbing Howard Dean-style personal attacks that inevitably backfire. Instead of Murtha looking bad for authoring such a destructive proposal, Schmidt managed to make Murtha look like the victim by attacking a 37 year Marine's courage.

Ridiculous personal attacks backfire, whether they're from the Rabid Left or the Rabid Right. Ask President Kerry how much help he received from Howard Dean, Michael Moore, MoveOn.hitler, and Daily "screw them" Kos.

Spare me the lecture. They republican "grownups" have botched the greatest opportunity our party has had by betraying most of Reagan's principles. Every time they bend over and take democrat abuse, give the democrats the green light to keep doing it. Our boys are dying in Iraq for us. The least the republicans can do is fight back for them. The grownups have lost their nerve. If they can't bat, they should step off the plate and let some else do it. Instead they turned on one of their own.

"Schmidt managed to make Murtha look like the victim by attacking a 37 year Marine's courage. "

Schmidt managed to make a mess by attempting to apologize for telling the truth. The line "Cowards Cut and Run, Marines Never Do" is one for the history books and she should have leaned into the fire and challenged anyone to find the the lie or the slander in that simple statement of fact. Despite, the immediate retreat, the sting of those words made it impossible for all but the most rabid of the Democrats to vote for the resolution.

This is what it truly means when they talk about speaking truth to power. It isn't easy, and often you get beat down for having the courage to do this.

Brinkman is toast in this district if he wastes our money contesting this next primary. I have always liked him, but the matter is settled. He needs to take the good will he has and use it to score another victory for our team, not create a fight that we cannot help but lose no matter what the outcome. Bob McEwen has a significant following in Brown County, but ultimately he just doesn't represent the district anymore, just a Washington based opportunist to us...

You need to choose whether you would rather defeat Schmidt or work to defeat Hackett (and clones) this next cycle, you won't be able to do both. And worse, wasting money and workers in a safe district takes it away from the real fight. Are you going to take resources away from supporting Blackwell by burning them in the 2nd fighting conservative against conservative.. its lame.. Its more important to challenge the Dems in seats like Strickland's. Its important to work out the DeWine question and move past the woes of the Taft administration.

Actually I'd like to see all of that happen - Ken Blackwell for Governor, Paul Hackett defeated no matter what he runs for, and for a conservative to defeat tax-hiker Jean Schmidt in the 2nd CD.

Brinkman and McEwen won't square off against each other again. One will run, one won't, and it looks like it'll be McEwen. I'm not a big McEwen fan, but I'd rather we nominate a conservative who can hold the seat over a tax-hiking RINO who could easily lose it and nearly did the last time around.

McEwen will go down again if he tries, and make no friends in the effort. Jean is no RINO, and this tax hiking BS just is lame as it gets. Is just the same as the Dems discovering that they were against the war all along despite their votes and what they said. If you want the Legislature not to hike taxes each time we have a recession, then amend the Ohio Constitution to allow us to run a Deficit when the economy has had X number of negative quarters or something like that. Otherwise, Ohio will raise stupidly raise taxes every time there is a recession and then the only question is how this will be done.

Taft proposed a raft of tax hikes on services that would be impossible to roll back, and that is his shame and the reason thinking folks can never forgive him. Jean did the responsible thing, as well as many others in the Ohio Legislature in the situation, put the tax where it can be easily removed when the economy improves. This tax has already been partly rolled back already. Ultimately this is the only way until a better formula is found.

You are just knee jerk upset that folks can and have to act responsibly once in a while and thats just too sad. It would be a whole lot more productive if you used your energy to do something like help change the Ohio Supreme Court composition so that we don't have the court driving education costs up in bizarre ways. Make a positive difference and let go of hating Jean, its just a waste of time.

If she up and does something that helps the other side.. well then her hold on the 2nd will dissappear like the morning dew, but this isn't the case. She is definitely on the side of the angels right now and not one of the squishy RINOs in the house. SO GET OVER IT!

Abolutely true. The article was horribly biased, but even if we granted it its assumptions, it is still really stupid of the Democrats part to put up billboards criticizing Schmidt in Portsmouth and Cincinnati.

Jean is no RINO, and this tax hiking BS just is lame as it gets.

Actually it's part of the public record. Follow along:

-- Jean Schmidt voted to raise Ohio's Sales Tax by 20%. Ken Blackwell opposed it. This vote allowed her to raise Ohio's budget by over 10%. They could have left out the tax increase, and still had more money to spend than they did in the prior budget cycle.

-- Schmidt voted to raise Ohio's Gas Tax by 6 cents/gallon. She and Bob Taft must think gas prices are too low.

-- Schmidt sponsored legislation which led to taxes being raised in Hamilton County and Cincinnati.

That's the Jean Schmidt tax record for you. We cannot condemn liberals like Hillary Clinton for their tax and spend policies, then defend RINO's like Jean Schmidt who do the same thing. These tax hikers in both parties need to be defeated.

I lived through this whole debate, like a democrat, you refuse to accept the context. Instead you point at an event and complain about someone acting responsibly for responsible reasons. Or, you distort the record so that you cover the actual facts to carry a useless point. The people of Cincinnati, misguidedly, voted to raise their own taxes. If you want to blame anyone for that, blame them.

This is the worst example of one issue voting. You are welcome to your small mind and your big hate.

Its a fact that this message doesn't resonate in the 2nd. It didn't carry the day in the previous primary and it won't carry the day at any point in the future. GET OVER IT!

Frankly, I would love it if they did at this point. It keeps the Dem's moral turpitude front and center. People know what Jean said and they see the wording of this sign and discredit who ever they would blame for its existence.

One might thinnk they planted the story to get out the message without actually having to pay for the billboard and take the heat for actually putting it up.

I lived through this whole debate, like a democrat, you refuse to accept the context.

Like a Democrat, you along with Bob Taft and Jean Schmidt believe that raising taxes and spending is the answer to everything. Because of Bob Taft's and Jean Schmidt's tax increases, we pay a lot more in gas taxes every time we fill our tanks. Because of Bob Taft's and Jean Schmidt's tax increases, we pay a lot more every time we purchase something that invokes a Sales Tax. Thanks RINO's.

There was nothing responsible about it. If they wanted to be responsible, they would have limited the growth in the spending and been able to balance the budget without raising taxes.

Do you not understand that they could have raised spending by about 4-5% without raising taxes? But that wasn't good enough for them. Instead they raise spending by 10%, and they raise our taxes to pay for it. Just like RINO's.

This is the worst example of one issue voting.

The issue of taxes and spending isn't one single issue. It's what determines the size of government, which is far more than one issue. Just like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Bob Taft and Jean Schmidt believe in a rapid expansion of government, and put the burden of paying for it on our backs. Tax and spend Republicans are just as fiscally destructive as tax and spend Democrats, except to a RINO.
