CONVICTED drug trafficker Nguyen Tuong Van showed courage going to his death, his lawyer said today.
The 25-year-old was executed in Singapore at 6am local time (9am AEDT), while his mother Kim grieved with friends and relatives at a nearby church at the scheduled time of the hanging.
"I know that he died the courageous death that he planned for himself and died as an optimistic young man, making us all extremely proud of him," lawyer Lex Lasry QC told ABC radio.
Mr Lasry said he thought the case would have a long-lasting impact.
"This case and its impact is going to have a significant effect here in Singapore, there's more feeling than people realise in this country about this sort of thing," he said.

Lesson of the day: Don't smuggle drugs into Singapore. They're serious.

"...he died the courageous death..."
We have troops who have died a courageous death, voluntarily placing themselves in harm's way for the greater good. There isn't much courageous about a court mandated execution for crimes.

under a mandatory regime.".Huh? Mandatory? Is that somewhere between democracy and communism? Maybe this country needs to adopt that for Tookie.

I hope Tookie goes out crying like a baby.
The preacher talked to me and he smiled,
Said, "Come and walk with me, come and walk one more mile.
Now for once in your life you're alone,
but you ain't got a dime, there's no time for the phone."
I've just got to get a message to you, hold on, hold on.
One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.
I told him I'm in no hurry,
but if I broke her heart, won't you tell her I'm sorry.
And for once in my life I'm alone,
and I've got to let her know just in time before I go.
I've just go to get a message to you, hold on, hold on.
One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.
Well I laughed but that didn't hurt,
and it's only her love that keeps me wearing this dirt.
Now I'm crying but deep down inside,
well I did it to him, now it's my turn to die.
I've just got to get a message to you, hold on, hold on.
One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.

I'm sure Ngyuen's halfwit brother for whom he smuggled the drugs to pay off said brother's loan shark debts told Nguyen how brave he was...

Sick!
Proud of a criminal smuggled in drugs ? He didn't have a choice. Death was not an option - nothing courageous about that situation.

I'm sure the media will claim he went courageously regardless. There is no truth in reporting anymore. There was no courage in the manner that this individual went out in. He was juiced, and none of the bleeding hearts dare speak of the rope dance, and how long it actually took until the dying quiver. It was not a "quick and painless" thing or it would have been in the first paragraph. This POS jerked and strangled and kicked, with the hood barely muffling its gurgles.

Somehow I think the authorities in Singapore are humane enough to use "a long drop and short stop". I doubt it was as drawn-out as you describe.

Singapore does use the long drop method of hanging, but never reveals details as to whether it worked or not. There is no reason to suspect the lack of details in this case indicated anything went wrong.

Somehow I think the authorities in Singapore are humane enough....I have been to Singapore. I know that they have no compunction about making an explicit example. Curiously, the word "humane" does not translate to the identical meaning of English.
