Welsh inventor's 'mosquito' makes noisy teens buzz off A Welsh inventor claims to have found the perfect solution to rowdy youngsters: noise. Howard Stapleton says his device, the "mosquito", emits an uncomfortable high-pitched ultrasonic sound that can be heard by children and teenagers, but almost no one over 30. It has successfully driven away noisy teens from a grocery store in the Welsh town of Barry and a shop in Stapleton's home town Merthyr Tydfil, making smoking, lounging and foul-mouthed youths a thing of the past.

Sounds like a mini-version of that sound cannon the ritzy cruise liner used to drive off the Somalian pirates last month.

Yo! I live in these areas, and they are rough! (well areas are) so if it works well in Barry and Merthyr Tydfil ( pronounced 'tid - fill') heck... it'll work anywhere!!!

I hope this "mosquito" is cheaper than the cell jammer, about ten grand for one that will do what you want. Too bad I'm poor.

It doesn't work for people over 30. Those aging hippies won't hear a thing.

I've heard that playing classical or CW music keeps away urban thugs. Apparently some c-stores are doing this to prevent loitering.

Probably the same frequency as most mosquito repellers. If so, I can hear them quite well and I am well past age 30.

It's an annoying sound alright, but hearing abilities vary quite a bit from person to person.

Merthyr Tydfil ( pronounced 'tid - fill')

But "Tydfil" is easy to sound out -- "Merthyr" is the problem. :-)

Hold on a minute! I occurs to me that a significant percentage of the teens targeted will have suffered significant upper frequency hearing loss due to exposure outlandishly amplified rock music, therefore, the "mosquito" will be inaudible to them as well.

If he can build this to wear around the neck of older folks to drive away punks, he will have done more for old folks freedom since the clapper.
