Governor's hire riles GOP conservatives -- ANALYSIS: A move to attract moderates
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/1/5 | Carla Marinucci

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision to appoint an influential Democratic operative as his top staffer is the first step as he negotiates a tricky path to re-election. Now he must hold onto the conservative Republican right, furious with the appointment, while winning back independents and Democrats, many furious with his agenda in the recent special election.

Schwarzenegger's hiring Wednesday of Susan Kennedy -- Cabinet secretary for his Democratic predecessor Gov. Gray Davis, a leader in the state's abortion rights movement and a lesbian who has married her longtime partner -- has already set off alarms among conservatives, whose leaders suggest they have been abandoned by their strongman governor.

"The question is: Do we challenge him for re-election,'' said Steve Frank, longtime political activist and publisher of the California Political News and Views, an influential conservative blog. "I believe it won't come to that, because this sets a signal that he's not running.

"He can't run as a Republican, because his administration has hired some of the key people we recalled with Gray Davis in the first place. And even should he run, he has no base left ... who is supporting him. Because what does he stand for?''

Michael Spence, who heads the California Republican Assembly, a conservative grassroots organization, said that within hours of the news of Kennedy's appointment, the buzz from the right included talk of finding alternatives to the GOP governor who has "betrayed the loyalty of people who worked for him in the special election.''

As I see it, the failure of California's conservatives to support Arnold's props in the last election there plays a huge part in this.

This is just so damn wrong!

Arnold does not realize that Republicans do not vote for Democrats, by proxy, as the staff of a RINO governor. And Democrats will always vote for Democrats. They don't vote for RINOS's no matter how many Dems are in their administration. What's the matter with this fool?

Schwarzenegger is terminating himself. He won't "Be back"!

Ditto that. I supported him when we lived there (for Comptroller) and Simon for Guv.

Isn't Arnold now following the same trajectory as Jesse Ventura in Minnesota? When the stars get bogged down in the details of governing, they get kinda bored...

Yeah well you don't see to well do you. Conservatives did not support some of the propositions because they were not conservative as they were touted as being. I, for one, did not want to give the governor power to legislate. I expect him to use the power he already has for something other than a socialist agenda. What you have to remember with Arnold is he talks conservative Republican but does socialist Democrat. His recent hiring of a known partisan Dem as cheif of staff is just disgusting. Even more disgusting are the party hacks on this site telling us that it is all our fault. I won't take it from them and I won't take it from you.

That's an assumption. One could just as easily and more justifiably assume that it was the failure of California's RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) to not support Arnold's props (and Arnold actually endorsed two of them late when they still had leads in the polls)

LOL. Analysis? Hardly. It seems the SF Chronicle is now the new mouthpiece for Arnold and Pete Wilson.

"The plague is apon us."

And it is causing stupifying stupidity amongst those here that knee-jerk into blaming conservatives on a conservative website with a non-voting charge as being the trigger for this falacious and fraudulent Governor's behavior!!!

There is NO other explanation for this false premise being promulgated here, other than deliberate malicious mischief. It's obscene that any FReeper must feel in any way compelled to defend against such an unprovable charge that is farsical on it's face!!!
