Insurgent offensive on Iraqi city (Ramadi)
BBC ^ | December 1 2005

Posted on 12/01/2005 2:20:57 AM PST by chemical_boy

Insurgents have attacked US bases and government offices in Ramadi, in western Iraq, and then dispersed throughout the city, residents say.

Scores of heavily-armed insurgents fired mortars and rockets at the buildings and then occupied several main streets.

The attack came as local leaders and US military officials were meeting at the al-Anbar provincial governor's office.

Ramadi has been a rebel stronghold for many months.

Residents in Ramadi told the Reuters news agency that hundreds of heavily armed men in masks were patrolling the main streets of the city and had set up checkpoints.

Citizens said leaflets distributed by the men declared that al-Qaeda in Iraq, the group run by Abu Musab Zarqawi, was now in control of the city.

I don't have a link, but since I was an adult then, I remember it well. The North Vietname launched a major, coordinated attack on multiple cities in 1968 during the Tet Holiday (Lunar New Year). It was a surprise and they had some short-term successes, particualry in Huey where they captured the citidal.

In this attack, they threw in all of the insurgent (Viet Cong) assets. At the end of the campaign, all ground gained was retaken by the US and ARVN forces. The Viet Cong was virtually destroyed, as were all NVA forces engaged. The VC were never an effective fighting force after that, just more of a romantic image for the liberals.

General Giap, the commander of the North Vietnamese Army reported to Ho Chi Mihn that they had had their collective butts kicked decisively and recommended that North Vietnam sue for peace. Ho Chi Mihn told him that thanks to Walter Cronkite and the American Media, their offensive was considered a major victory.

The Democrats in Congress committed to support the South Vietnamese after the US pull-out and the North Vietnamese Government promised not to invade the South at the Paris Peace Talks. Both groups betrayed their words. The Democrats abandoned South Vietnam and the North invaded with materiale help from China and the USSR.

The Fox reporter in Baghdad was on earlier this morning, saying that the U.S. forces have so far been unable to find any evidence that this event in Ramadi ever even happened.

There was a single mortar fired somewhere in Ramadi, but that they couldn't find anything else.

Sounds like maybe there's no story here? Some BBC reporter heard a rumor and ran with it. How unusual...

The Reuters report that started this BS ball rolling has been debunked - by ME, here in FOB Ramadi. There were no Mooj hordes storming the streets. There were no rocket attacks. Bunk and debunk.

The BBC and WAPO are simply parrotng Reuters. There are more embedded reporters with Mooj than there are with us.

Let 'em try to storm the wire. Like I said on the other thread, "we'll make the Chicago Fire look like a tailgater at Komisky Park."

I can't wait to see how many around here fall all over themselves crediting FNC with being on top of this story. Why do I have the feeling the numbers will pale in comparison to those mocking it as a "missing persons" or "car chase" channel?

We have had a few media types visit us, out here outside the Green Zone. Fox has never showed their faces, neither have CNN. We had two reporters from some local rag in Utah following the exploits of 167th Cav (UTARNG), and the spectacular story of the Marine EOD Gunny who flipped the bird to Mooj after they blew his ass off.

Other than that, it's just not sexy enough to show up out here in Ramadi. Even the USO doesn't bother to come here.

Murtha says our military is worn out like an old shoe and he's a war hero.

I think Murtha's got it backwards...

He's worn out like an old shoe and our military men and women are war heroes.

I wonder why there haven't been any movies made about Tet? It seems like it would make a great movie.

Thanks for your up close input. It's great to see this stuff getting debunked. One report I did see suggested that whatever MAY have happened was little more than a publicity stunt. The early source does seem to have been Rooters, and everyone else seemed to embellish the same report.

And thanks for your service!

No, no! It's all true! The terrorists took over the streets in my town this morning and set up checkpoints!

And that, boss, is why I was late to work...
