Tonight [November 29], Comedy Central will air a special by Denis Leary, Merry F#%$in Christmas (it first aired two nights ago and is scheduled to air again on Dec. 17). The show consists of several skits, a cartoon and musical performances.
There is a skit about lesbian nuns, and a song by Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering Church Choir about a hooker. But by far the most offensive part of the show is the monologue by Denis Leary on the origins of Christmas. Here is part of what he says:
Merry Christmas. Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgineven after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.
Tom Cruise is taking a lot of s--- for belonging to a religion, Scientology, that believes aliens came to this planet 75 million years ago. That is nothing. I was raised Catholic. We believe Mary was a virgin and Jesus ended up walking on water, creating a bottomless jug of wine and rising from the dead. Oh, yeah, and Tom Cruise is crazy.
Listen, Christmas is built on a line of bulls---. Do I believe there was a baby Jesus? You bet your ass I do. But I believe that nine months before he was born someone sure as s--- banged the hell out of his mom.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:
I am asking Catholic League members, and friends of the Catholic League, to e-mail Doug Herzog, the president of Comedy Central, requesting that he nix the Dec. 17th showing of this vile special, and any future showings that might be planned. He can be contacted at Doug.Herzog@comedycentral.com.
Hate speech dressed in humorous garb is still hate speech. Leary is obviously bedeviled by some disorder, but nothing excuses this crap.
"Most Christians and for that matter Moslems believe Jesus was born of a virgin."
I believe ALL Christian denominations believe Jesus was born of a virgin (as the virgin birth is what was required by Isiah's (? may be Elijah, can't recall) prophecy.
It is the issue of whether Mary REMAINED a virgin post-birth is where Christian denominations part ways.
Denis....one letter away from Penis.
In some instances this form of passive protest is fine, however, there are times when enough is enough and action greater than passively not watching is called for. I am not a Catholic, but this is highly offensive and completely outside the bounds. It is unecessary and only done to provoke outrage among middle America. Gee, how about a skit and a monologue about allah? How about a funny skit about the origins of Kwanzaa?
I agree. The t.v. has an 'off' position for a reason. More importantly, some people just need to lighten up. Dennis Leary is not Bob Hope, but it's humor all the same. If you don't like to be shocked and/or disgusted but nevertheless entertained, then don't watch him. But even tasteless comedy is still comedy, and we don't have to put political correctness ahead of all forms of fun.
I can handle a lot of comedy, but this goes way over the line. It's not funny, either, which is the first rule of comedy.
It made me laugh. I'm not ashamed to say I enjoy a little indecency now and then. Having watched and enjoyed Leary's show will not change my plans to go to church on Sunday.
We can take it. Denis Leary is only making himself look small and foolish.
It's Dennis Leary, what do you expect?
Switch over to the cooking channel, there are alway good show on about yummy food!
Don't worry, I've seen skits about kwanza's origin where someone always tries to imply that it's an African religion, and someone else always points out that it's from the 60's in America.
Dennis Leary's kind of humor is prurient, tasteless, and gratuitous and provides a glide-path for our society's devolution to the 'dark side'.
I must say the most offensive people I've ever run across are lapsed Catholics. I suppose even Lucifer was an angel once.
how can anyone watch this guy on comedy central? you miss half his routine for all the BLEEPs.
It's not so much that this sludge is offensive (which it is). It's that it's so shopworn.
I agree with turning the channel. However, this is OUR religion he is bashing and we do not like it. He wouldn't do it with other relgions or races would he? No, today it is just easier to bash Catholics and we are sick of it.
Never listen to somebody who can't figure out how to spell his own first name.
That goes for Denis, Barbra, Jeananne, etc...
Ironically, turn it around on the Leftist with humor against them, they go ballistic as evidenced by the FReeper posts regarding a recent book.
Institutionalized humor against conservatives should not be taken lightly....that was our problem years ago (we wouldn't stoop that low, change the channel, etc.,).
Today? Simply fire back at them every chance you get......Watch their reactions! Bwahahahaha!
Penis Leary would not take kindly to over-pampered, over-paid actor jokes.
It's not just liberals apparently, but some on FR, given some of the comments on here.
He wouldn't dare speak like that about Muslim faith.
