Denis Leary's Sick Idea of Humor (Bashes Christian Belief)
Catholic League ^ | 11/29/2005 | n/a

DENIS LEARY’S SICK IDEA OF HUMOR

Tonight [November 29], Comedy Central will air a special by Denis Leary, “Merry F#%$in’ Christmas” (it first aired two nights ago and is scheduled to air again on Dec. 17). The show consists of several skits, a cartoon and musical performances.

There is a skit about lesbian nuns, and a song by “Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering Church Choir” about a hooker. But by far the most offensive part of the show is the monologue by Denis Leary on the origins of Christmas. Here is part of what he says:

“Merry Christmas. Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgin—even after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.

“Tom Cruise is taking a lot of s--- for belonging to a religion, Scientology, that believes aliens came to this planet 75 million years ago. That is nothing. I was raised Catholic. We believe Mary was a virgin and Jesus ended up walking on water, creating a bottomless jug of wine and rising from the dead. Oh, yeah, and Tom Cruise is crazy.

“Listen, Christmas is built on a line of bulls---. Do I believe there was a baby Jesus? You bet your ass I do. But I believe that nine months before he was born someone sure as s--- banged the hell out of his mom.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:

“I am asking Catholic League members, and friends of the Catholic League, to e-mail Doug Herzog, the president of Comedy Central, requesting that he nix the Dec. 17th showing of this vile special, and any future showings that might be planned. He can be contacted at Doug.Herzog@comedycentral.com.

“Hate speech dressed in humorous garb is still hate speech. Leary is obviously bedeviled by some disorder, but nothing excuses this crap.”

McCain has the same lean and hungry look about him.

Give me men like Ted Kennedy, who are fat.

Your problem is the word "we". It indicates a collectivist assumption. Abandoning that assumption will make you a conservative and give you persoanl peace.

The word we is not a problem for me and Anthem wasn't that great of a book.

Here is how it works: filthy comedians get to decide what kind of culture they EMIT. You get to decide what kind of culture you CONSUME. Between the two of you, there is no common culture. You and Leary are not a "we".

No man is an island. Human relationships exist far beyond a mere economic understanding. For a society to exist it must have a common culture, not multiculturalism nor atomistic individualism.

The essence of conservatism is the assertion that the 'we" be voluntary as much as possible.

No. The essence of conservatism is home and hearth, kith and kin, faith and freedom. Yours is a libertarian economist's definition.

One of my goals in life is to die having never read a Rand book. But I can see where that would be your initial reflex. After all, we both use the term "collectivist', therefore we both must think alike on all points.

I agree no man is an island. But the sociological perspective of the New Testament is to reject the earthly City and to regard ourselves as aliens in it. We are NOT in community with the non-christian culture surrounding us; our community is the church. Leave aside for the moment our differences in how we might define "church"; I assume we can agree the koine "ecclesia" does not embrace "the local Walmart" or "the Comedy Channel". So I'm not arguing objectivist atomism, neither am I arguing economics; I'm arguing NT counter-culture. When you enter the church, your word "we" changes; it now excludes the world (read: everybody on the Comedy Channel) and includes the community of converted. I agree neither of us can avoid being apart of a 'we'; I'm just puzzled that Christians have Denis Leary in their "we". He's not in mine.

I'm sure some use the word "conservative" to mean "heart and hearth, etc". All good things. I have nothing bad to say about them. You will not preserve them by complaining about the people who don't care about them.

I expect that in real life (as opposed to the internet) you and I are far more alike than either of is to Mr. Leary. Why in the world would it bother you for some idiot on tv to insult all things sacred?

To adapt Jesus' answer when someone asked him why the tower fell on certain ones: I'm not surprised when Denis Leary blasphemes the Holy Ghost. I'm surprised when he does not.

Well, even if he DOES bash all religions it is still vile, tasteless and if he can't get laughs any other way than to bash what others hold sacred then he is not a comediene...he needs crutches. I STILL do not like it. Wonder how he would like it if we made fun and distasteful remarks about how he does things or how he believes in other things? He probably wouldn't even recognize the fact we were doing it. He's a sad excuse for comedy. I hope they pull his show off the air. If he can't find true funny things to joke about then he should pack up his sack and go home cause making the rude, vile references to our Blessed Mother is NOT comedy. It's an attention getter.

You are right. He definitely is NOT funny. To be funny you have to be creative like Jerry Seinfeld. This guy is so far from Jerry and real comedic talent and he knows it. He has to pick on other people's religions and try to offend them. I know he is Catholic but...with the kind of filth spewing from his mouth he is Catholic in name only becuase if he had the True Catholic Sense he would not ever even begin to speak in this filthy, vile manner.

You bet! But I am willing to bet that Mr. Herzong is very sensitive to hate speech -- selectively.

My opinion of dennis leary remains unchanged. He's a smart-assed, no-talent punk who thinks he's tough.

Why don't they trash the muslims on a comedy show?

They like keeping their heads attached to their necks.

Revolting. THIS is certainly what the founding fathers had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment /sarcasm. In a decent society this would never have made it on the air.

I'm sorry. Perhaps you misunderstood me. When I said we, I was refering to Christians. I wasn't including Mr. Leary. And while we are counter-cultural NOW, we were not always so.

You didn't get the memo? A guy can spend decades performing pro bono surgery and feeding the kittens of crippled orphans, but the moment he cracks wise -- then he's satan on a stick.

Denis, Do the same skit only about Muhammed. I'll send flowers to your funeral.

Naw, he'd have to be a real man to do that - no chance of that!

He's got a point. Not that I find his schtick all that funny, but crazy stories are just that..crazy stories. And crazy stories require faith. Don't like him? Don't listen to him.

I appreciate firefighters. It would appear leary does too.

I still don't like his jokes.

We have Dish network on annual contract. When our contract is up, we're ditching Dish. CNN is a joke. Fox News is an upgrade on Dish. Like you, all we'd like is a couple of watchable shows (including Fox News, TLC, TDC and the History channel). The majority of those other channels are worthless to us as well.
