Three people are in custody Wednesday morning after Lubbock police discovered the possible makings of a meth lab and explosive devices. NewsChannel 11's Suleika Acosta uncovers the details.
At around 7:30 Tuesday night officers stopped a truck near the Driftwood Apartments located at 5800 Toledo. They searched the vehicle and found what looked like a mobile meth lab. That's not all officers found. They also discovered what appeared to be two pipe bombs, one in the bed and one behind the seat of the truck. Officers called in the bomb squad to assist. The squad removed the devices with a special robot. Then they used a disrupter to destroy the pipes in a park across the street.
Authorities tell us they are still investigating whether or not the devices were actual bombs. "It's my understanding right now that it doesn't appear that they were actually explosive devices, we don't know exactly what they were," says Lieutenant.. Roy Bassett.
Just before midnight officers searched one suspect's apartment. Officers tell us searched for more explosive devices and narcotics. At this point they can not tell what they found in the apartment.
The two suspects inside the truck were arrested. A woman at the apartment is also in custody this morning.
Lubbock news ping.
Wanna ping the usual gang of folks?
I had the same reaction when I saw "disruptor" in the body of the story.
Federation cops use photon torpedoes to blow up pipe bombs.
I will try to keep tabs on the story during the day and report any updates.
--I suspect my tagline applies---
I agree. I once knew some folks in LPD. If I had not lost contact with them, then I could ask them for the "inside scoop" on this story.
Who was arrested? White boys or Methicans?
No particulars, yet, on the folks arrested.
The highway over Hoover Dam was closed for several hours to investigate a "suspicious" object---you could tell from the TV camera shot it was a piece of about 2-inch angle iron about two feet long--it was a clamp of some sort that fell off a highway dep't centerline painting truck--
Hub Ping
My bet it was white guys who use their own product. . Mexicans aren't into pipe bombs
My folks live near a lake in North Texas and heard a loud explosion one night. Just down the road was a meth lab that no one knew about......... they do now.
Mobile phones, mobile meth labs, mobile strip clubs...we're a nation on the go!
"Pipe bomb"
I heard this on the news today (KFYO). Thanks for the ping.
A central Lubbock neighborhood is safe, but Tuesday evening, it was the scene of possible explosives scare. It started when police pulled over a driver for not using his turn signal. But what they found inside the car required additional back-up.
During the traffic stop police found a suspicious device, that looked like a pipe bomb. Bomb technicians were called in to detonate the device at an area park, just feet away from houses and apartments. Police were able to use some high-tech equipment to safely detonate the device.
Lt. Roy Bassett from LPD said, "It is not unusual for drug users to be paranoid and have devices so we didn't know what we were dealing with." One neighbor said, "I left because I thought better safe than sorry." The so-called-bombs turned out to be duds, but the make-shift meth lab was real.
Bassett said, "The truck was pulled over for a traffic stop, but we found what appeared to be a meth lab in the truck." The travelling meth lab gave police enough evidence to get a warrant to search the car owner's apartment, where they found methamphetamine and other narcotics.
Two weeks ago Lubbock police were called to 23rd and Avenue P for a suspicious package. The 'package' was safely removed from the neighborhood, and police then took it to their firing range to x-ray and destroy it. Police say the pipes were detonated in the neighborhood park because it was a large space and it was safer to detonate it there than travel with the device across town. Police also say safety is always their first concern.

Sad news....I heard on the radio this a.m. that one of the perps was the grandson of the late Congressman George Mahon.
