WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Lieberman, fresh from a two-day visit to Iraq over the Thanksgiving holiday, said Monday he was hopeful U.S. forces could begin a "significant" withdrawal by the end of next year or in 2007.
"The country is now in reach of going from Saddam Hussein to self-government and, I'd add, self-protection," the Connecticut Democrat said in a conference call with reporters. "That would be a remarkable transformation ... I saw real progress there."
Lieberman, one of the most hawkish Democrats in the Senate, said the effectiveness of Iraqi security forces and the ability of a new Iraqi government to rule after the Dec. 15 elections are critical factors in determining when U.S. troops could come home. But if all goes well, he forsees a pullout beginning a year from now.
"If Iraqi forces continue to gain the confidence the American military sees there now ... We will be able to draw down our forces," he said.
Lieberman has visited Iraq four times in 17 months. He said there are signs life is returning to normal, including a profusion of cell phones and satellite TV dishes on rooftops.
"About two-thirds of the country is in really pretty good shape," he said, noting most attacks are in the so-called "Sunni Triangle" region. "Overall, I came back encouraged."
Lieberman said he hopes President Bush's speech Tuesday night will give a clearer picture to the American public of the progress being made in the war.
"It's time for some details," said Lieberman. "He's gotta describe some of the progress that I saw there. It's gotta be realistic."

Yes Lieberman is a big time hawk, and pretty much the only national-level Democrat who supports Bush's war efforts. He is a breath of fresh air and Democrats would do well to listen to him.
It's obvious that the Senator has no Presidential aspirations in '08.With columns like this,he would garner fewer votes in the primaries than would Zippy The Wonder Slug.
I believe Lieberman is up for re-election next year. He didn't resign in 2000 when running for the VP slot with Algore.
CT is pretty liberal, no? Wonder how this will help/hurt his odds? Be interesting to see...
No, but a McCain type might have him as Veep. Maybe he sees the libs don't have a chance in '08 and he's bucking for a moderate GOP candidate to pick him up. Maybe.
Joe Lieberman has ZERO chance to win the Presidency as a Democrat, the way that the party is now.
He isn't conservative, but he's certainly not on the Extreme Left, like Gore and Kerry (to mention recent losers), or Clinton and Clinton (who are Extr. Left though they try to tell people that they're not).
I meant in terms of him being re-elected as a senator, not president.
I have never voted for a democratic president in my adult life, but I would vote for Lieberman over McCain or many of the other RINOs any day.
Oh. My bad. I think he'll fine, but I'm not a lib and I don't live in CT. I live in my own liberal hell (CA). Boxer, Feinstein, Pelosi, Villaraigosa, Waters, Watson...Tylenol...
Liebermann talks a good game...but remember who he chose to run with in 2000.
I absolutely can't see McCain getting the GOP nomination. I'll wager that McCain can't see himself getting it and I'll bet that Lieberman understands this as well.
So the best that Lieberman can hope for is the VP slot on a third party ticket.I'd be surprised if he would settle for that.McCain would, but not Joe.
That's the main thing I hold against Lieberman. I think he leased his soul out (rather than sold it outright) to run with Gore. It looks as if the lease expired and he is in control of his own soul again.
Mr. Lieberman is becoming a real statesman. Good for him.
Joe L has consistently supported the war in Iraq, the GWOT, and even been supportive of Bush rather directly on these matters. I think he is sincere, as he has been steadfast since 9/11 on these matters.
I agree with him on little else, but I give him his due on this issue.
I remember he ran with Al Gore and became "pro choice" on abortion. As an Orthodox Jew this is a no - no. And I think his stance on the Iraqi war stems from the fact that he is Jewish and is alarmed about Israel if we pull out. While I agree with him about Iraq, I did not trust him with Al Gore and do not trust him now.
It is still nice that he would come out with something like this, nice that it would get some press. Then again, I did get this from Fox ;-)
