Hunters now the hunted.
Sierra Times ^ | 11/29/2005 | Michael E. Cook

Hunters are the latest targets of the animal rights extremists and may become victims of homicide. It seems terrorist organizations like the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and Win Animal Rights (WAR) have become so radical that now they believe it is alright to kill humans to protect animals. Right now they are headed to New Jersey to stop a bear hunt by any means they can.

I just read a report by Cam Edwards on the 21st where ALF went to the home of Lloyd Harbor, New York mayor Leland Hairr and painted anti-hunting slogans on his home and his car in the garage because he had asked the state for a special season to help with a problem of too many deer in the area of his city.

Well the state of New York had already backed down, but not because of this act, they had already stopped because of pressure from the Catholic seminary in that city. So this criminal act never needed to happen in the first place. The police need to bring those responsible for this to justice as quick as possible.

There is a common thread between ALF and WAR, however they deny any connection. The North American Animal Liberation Press Office (NAALPO) has as one of their national press officers Camille Hankins who is the founder of WAR. They also have a Dr. Jerry Vlasak a trauma surgeon in Los Angeles, California as a press officer and he is a member of ALF. In an interview on “60 Minutes” Vlasak has said, “I think for five lives, ten lives, 15 human lives, we could save a million, two million, ten million nonhuman lives.” He told CBS, “I think people who torture innocent beings should be stopped. And if they won’t stop when you ask them nicely, they won’t stop when you demonstrate to them what they’re doing is wrong, then they should be stopped using whatever means necessary.” What does this mean to you?

They have become terrorists and their target is hunters and others. I think they mean to do whatever it takes including breaking the law and using homicide to stop hunting of animals. Every hunter who goes into the field should be ready and willing to do what it takes to protect themselves. This means you may need to leave someone in camp now to protect it. You will not only have to watch for game now you will have to distrust and watch anyone else in the wood with you. Can you see how this is going to affect our national pastime and heritage? What is this world coming too? We may soon know if they are willing to take a human life to protect a bear.

To date no one in government is speaking out against these organizations. Are they afraid of them or what? Right now these groups have destroyed over 100 million dollars worth of property and they are becoming more violent. They have declared war on us so when will our government and law enforcement do something about it? It’s time to start fighting back. Perhaps the ALF and WAR people will wake up to find someone painted their homes and vehicles. Do we need a group to fight them on their own terms? Will the government do anything to that group? I think they would.

What this means is that you and I will have to be very careful in the future and around our own homes. Will I become a target because I write about this? Well I can tell you I am already on their list for not only writing about them but because I have fought against them politically on many occasions. I will tell them the same thing I told criminals who made threats against me and my family, “Come on down and make your first shot count, because the second one is mine and I don’t miss.”

This is not the America we asked for and it sure isn’t what many of us fought the wars for, but it is reality in this day and age. It’s time to get active and stop this kind of activity before it goes to a shooting war. Call our political leaders and let them know how you feel. In short get involved before it is to late, the time to act is now.

God Bless America and God bless our troops still in harms way.

The key to good tasting venison is to make sure you remove the tallow (fat) and the membranes encasing the muscle. That is where the gamey taste comes from. Also, don't cook it to death, like you would do with pork. You need to add a friendly tasting fat, like bacon or beef for moisture. Venison really takes a marinade though. Slice it thin, marinade in terriaki sauce and stir fry!

I recall living in Albuquerque when a serious drought would hit that drove the black bears down from the Sandias in droves. They'd show up in peoples' backyards batting the dogs around and some would end up out on I-25 causing accidents.

Ah, let's not go there...besides, there is a hole in them, otherwise there would be a bounty on them. :-)

1066AD, you've been added to my private RKBA ping-list. Let me know if you don't want on.

The list has been kind of quiet of late, since things have been relatively calm. When that changes, activity for this list will again increase.

Stay safe,

I was up scouting around at the Delaware Water Gap this past weekend and I had it in my head to hike in on the logging road before sun up so I could have more time to find a good spot for the hunt.

I started walking along that road about 4:30AM under a 1/8 moon, and had gone into the woods maybe 400 yards when I started to hear a grumble...could have been my stomach so I kept walking. A bit further I paused for a second and heard a rustling of leaves ahead and to the left maybe 100 feet away, kind of like a 200 pound squirrel. Then I heard much more of that grumble and growling coming from the same location.

I was only scouting and New Jersey is very anti-gun so I was unarmed. I wouldn't describe the growls as angry exactly, but it was clearly a sign of discomfort for the growler so I backtracked back to the car and waited for the light to come up a bit.

When I retraced my steps the tracks in the snow made it clear that I had come up on at least 2 cubs and a Sow who had been rooting around in the dark for food. They probably would have just taken off if I kept walking toward them but totally unarmed with 5 feet of visibility I wasn't going to find out.

It was a little scary, but in truth that's the whole reason I enjoy the outdoors in the first place.

Skyline drive is within 90 minutes of Washington DC and Baltimore MD. Most of the weekend crowd is made up of citified lolligaggers in crisp new L.L. Bean gear who have never seen a wild animal bigger than a squirrel. This isn't the only time I've seen them go nuts over bear. Another time I watched a couple of teenagers scale a dangerous slope to get a better view of a large bear that had broken cover in a high clearing. They weren't in imminent danger from the bear, which was probably five hundred feet away from them, but if they had slipped they would have tumbled down over broken talus studded with deadfall.

I, on the other hand, could see the bruin just fine with my binoculars.

You might wish to check the alabama game laws. Here's a link:

http://www.dcnr.state.al.us/hunting/regulations/regbook2005-2006-final.pdf

220-2-.02 Legal Arms, Ammunition, and Methods for Hunting
(1) GENERAL (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to
PROHIBITIONS: use any method or have in their possession any weapon or ammunition contrary to this regulation while
hunting or attempting to hunt game birds and animals or other species provided for herein unless expressly
provided for by duly enacted laws of the State of Alabama.

DEER WHEN AND WHERE DOG OR STALK HUNTING IS ALLOWED –
• Rifles using centerfire, mushrooming ammunition.
• Shotguns, 10 gauge or smaller using buckshot, slugs, or single round ball.
• Muzzle-loaders and Black Powder Handguns--.40 caliber or larger, provided further it shall be illegal to possess other firearms while hunting with muzzleloaders during the special muzzleloader season.
• Long bows, compound bows, or crossbows.
• Handguns or pistols using centerfire, mushrooming ammunition.

Pretty clear to me that possession of a non-conforming weapon is not allowed. Pretty clear that .22 pistols are not conforming.

Granted, most folks may carry a small pistol for snakes. Granted, most wardens probably wouldn't cause a fuss about it. But you must also grant some wardens like to play 'gotcha'.

People do eat bear meat. Also, the increasing population of bears puts human children at risk as the excess bear population gets pushed into suburban areas

And lets' not forget....Bears also put nonhuman lives at risk....Oh the tragedy!!!!!!!!!!!!1

And the majority of people don't realize the Humane Society of the U.S. is run by people who are just as radical as PETA/ALF members.

Two words - Wayne Pacelle. He's on record supporting a total hunting ban. I should also mention that HSUS doesn't send a dime to local Humane Society animal shelters. That money doesn't go to help man's best friend.

Bears dogs and wolves are nautral prey animals for humans and have been for a long time.

Many cultures eat dogs, I have eaten many a bear they are very good. It is just in this country over the last 100 years or so we have refind are tastes to farm raised animals.

*************

I worry about that with the hounds, since a black bear was spotted in the neighborhood last year. We're lucky to have a six foot chain-link fence around our back yard. I know it can't keep a bear out if it wants to come in, but it can discourage it and slow it down slightly.

I can understand a law that says I have to hunt with a certain class of firearm, but to make it illegal to pack a.22 as well is stupid, I've always got a .22 mag loaded with snake shot around.
Hunters don't have to worry about ELF/ALF/PETA. They are cowards and don't go anywhere that they might get hurt. I'm ranch raised, and I still live out in the country surrounded by livestock. These COWARDS never come out our way because they know that all of us have big dogs to sound the alert, long range rifles that we know how to shoot, and backhoes to take care of their final resting place. Our neighbors just down the road on both sided and across in back of us all have radios. When something starts we know the cops are at least 30 minutes away and it is up to us to take care of our own. There is very limited access, one road in and one road out.
We have actually talked about putting up a sign on our road that says "No ALF/ELF/PETA ALLOWED. THOSE WHO ENTER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE." We contemplated putting that sign right above the one that says, "WE ARE SELF INSURED, AND WE DON'T MISS." We don't have to worry about these idiots. Cowards like them will only hide in the dark. They won't even get near those of us who are prepared to shoot back. They will only attack unguarded property or unarmed people. They are COWARDS!!!!!

Ahhhh but it's literally ancient history. I'd have to excise the part about checking out the NVG's because our "Uncle" sorta frowned on use of company equipment for personal use...lol. My buddy also got a set of walkie talkies from a friend of his in the Div G3 (Operations) so we could keep in touch if we lost sight of each other in the extremely heavy brush. We didn't really need the commo and the night vision, but geeeeze it was fun to have and work with!

In response to y'all's comments:

1. Fine, the hunter's wearing bright orange. But, as papertyger pointed out, so will the ALF types.

2. Liberals intensely dislike firearms because they reward individual skill as opposed to some sense of entitlement or perceived "social virtue." About the only thing the ALF will accomplish is to alert the target--and if he's posing as another hunter, he's hanging a bullseye out for a much more skilled opponent.

Hit me with the first shot, boys...because if you miss, you WILL get hit by MY first shot.

Looks like we're going to "duke" it out on this one. ;-)

I just spoke with Allan Andress, Chief, Enforcement Section, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at (334) 242-3467. He stated if I have a legal permit to carry a rimfire .22 pistol, and with respect to Regulation 220-2-.02, I can carry that pistol while hunting with legal arms. Please note that the regulation states "hunting or attempting to hunt" with a particular gun, bow, etc. I interpret that to mean if I'm not hunting deer with my .22, I'm legal.
