[Updated: 5:20 p.m., Wednesday] Matthew Steyart, the 21-year-old soldier from Mount Shasta killed earlier this week in Afghanistan, was remembered Wednesday as an enthusiastic, likeable, hard-working and fun-loving outdoorsman.
"He had a great work ethic that was a part of everything in his life," said Rodney Greer, his wrestling coach at Mount Shasta High School, where Steyart graduated in 2002. "He just gave 100 percent, from zero to full throttle, nothing in between. That was the way he lived his life."
The Army said in a press release that Steyart died Tuesday while on patrol in the village of Shah Wali Kot when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee. Further details were not available.
Steyart was trained as an infantryman and graduated from jump school, earning his parachutist's badge before being assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, which is based in Vicenza, Italy. The unit deployed to Afghanistan last winter.

While home, he visited with friends and relatives, tinkered with the 1983 Toyota pickup that he used for off-roading, and talked about pursuing a career as a game warden for the California Department of Fish and Game.
"He just enjoyed whatever he was doing," recalled Jake Cole, a high school classmate and hunting pal. "I never understood why he wanted to jump out of airplanes, but he liked that. He thought it was really neat."

And echoing sentiments of others in the community, Sandy Richardson said she and her husband considered Steyart "a hero in every sense of the word."

Prayers sent for Matthew Steyart and his family.
All humanity is of one Author, and is one volume; when one dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated; God employs several translators; some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but Gods hand is in every translation, and his hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again for that library where every book shall lie open to one another.

RIP Hero. Thank you and the world will thank you for generations to come. May God comfort your family and may they know peace and keep pride in your contribution to an historic cause and sacrifice. God Bless....
We can never repay the debt owed to our soldiers proudly serving their nation, much less repay those who lay down their lives for our freedom. I can only offer prayers for your grieving family along with my family's sincere gratitude, as well as a promise that my children will ALWAYS know of and respect our military's sacrifices. Rest in peace, Matthew. Job well done!
Thank you, for your son.
Our hearts ache for you, and we pray you may find comfort.
From the mom of an Army (Airborne) infantryman.

""He just gave 100 percent, from zero to full throttle, nothing in between. That was the way he lived his life."
More fitting words would be difficult to find. It must have been thrilling to have been in his life.
Thank you Matthew, and God Bless You.
Discovered on the news that CA had the highest number of those serving in Iraq. TX is third. Can't remember who is second. Our CA men and women are making Iraq, America and the world a better place for ALL mankind, for all time!!!
