WHITEWATER, WI (AP) - Bernie Dalsey is taking some ideas from the Democratic Party, some from the Republicans and some of his own - and he's creating his own party: the Justice Party.
The 47-year-old Whitewater resident has become so disgusted with American government and politics that he wanted to start his own party.
"I feel there's a big void," Dalsey said. "I thought, 'What the hell? Nobody else is doing it.' "
After all, some historians believe the Republican party was started in Ripon, WI in 1854.
Dalsey, a former Green and Libertarian candidate for state Assembly, has called the Federal Election Commission and the Wisconsin Elections Board to get authorization for the party name to appear on the ballots, if any candidates surface.
He set up a nonstock company to help manage funding and a Web site.
Dalsey is currently the only official party member, although he said several people he's spoken with agree with many of his stances.
Dalsey predominantly leans to the left side of the political spectrum, believing the Democrats are marginally better than the Republicans in a two-party system.
He wants to see national health care, supports abortion rights and would like to see a higher tax on the wealthy.
But he also supports gun rights, opposes same-sex marriages and wants to close America's borders to illegal immigrants.
"It doesn't make any sense to me to take everything from just the left, the right or the middle," Dalsey said of his views. "There are good ideas on the left, the right and in the middle. It's best to see what makes sense."
Some of the ideas are extreme, including closing all overseas U.S. military bases, severely limiting special-interest dollars in political campaigning and eliminating all foreign aid.
Dalsey is targeting nonvoters as those most willing to follow the Justice Party.
Good Afternoon, Wisconsin Conservative Politics Ping List Members!
Hope you don't abandon us for "The Justice Party!" ;)
He sounds like a populist..
Beware of any organization whose title embraces the word 'justice' or 'peace'.
in essence, hes a democrat.
There are really quite a few others -- but only one type of party is needed --- THE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE PARTY. Sounds like a good name to me... :-)
I was somewhat hopeful until I read his positions on the issues.
I think we should encourage him. It would draw votes from the Democrats. I don't think there is much appeal to conservatives.
Completely pathetic.
"No Justice, No Peace!"
You betcha.
(You wouldn't be interested in my 'Peaceful Justice Democracy', would you?)
There are dozens of new parties formed all the time.
None of them will succeed until one or both of the current parties are dissolved, fractured, or prosecuted for systemic racketeering....
The successful New Party will be made in large part of elected members of the Rep/Dem parties. Those politicians will switch parties to the New Party thus giving the NP immediate power with a swing vote.
Anyone proclaiming "Justice" should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism.
What this man views as Justice may be at odds with the rule of law (quelle surprise) and the Constitution (or what's left of it anyway).
Why repeat what fails?
"Whatever I Stand For at the Moment" Party.
He tried to get that one, but it was already taken by John Kerry. ;)
I want the "Free Chocolate for Life" Party. I could get behind that one. :)
He sounds like a centrist Democrat, which is what alot of Republicans consider themselves to be these days. They would have voted for FDR or JFK but never Bill Clinton, who was considered "centrist" by today's average Democrats because he dared to nod to the Republicans by signing welfare reform into law.
The majority of today's Democrats are too far to the left. Alot of Republicans will come to the center on social issues but remain fiscally conservative. Democrats aren't allowed to do that now. They have to be far left on everything, which is why they always lose.
BTW, no disrespect to the Cheesehead Freepers, but the Republican Party was founded in Exeter, NH by Amos Tuck.
