What a mesh [Mary Mapes Book Gets Taken Apart By our Friends At Powerline]
Powerline ^ | Nov. 28, 2005 | Scott Johnson

I've spent the last few days reading Mary Mapes's Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power. Mapes was of course the producer of the September 8, 2004 60 Minutes II segment attacking President Bush's Air National Guard Service.

The book is infuriating in so many ways that it would take an inordinate amount of space to do justice to it, and I'm not sure whether to take it seriously. Yet it has won remarkably favorable notices in respectable venues such as the Washington Post, for example, where Paul Farhi had kind words for it: "Lashing back over the memo scandal."

It is a deeply dishonest book that takes advantage of the ignorance, gullibility, and derangement of its target audience. It depends on its readers complete ignorance of the record in general, and of the Thornburgh-Boccardi report on the 60 Minute broadcast segment in particular. Reviewers like Farhi seem not to have the slightest knowledge of the subject.

But it makes good lining for a bird cage.

Mary Mapes is an outright fraud and liar. Her and Dan Rather got caught telling a huge lie in order to take Bush and Republicans down. She is dishonest and hishonorable. Its safe to say that her book is probably a big lie as well.

The report is full of information that discredits the segment in its entirety, belies Mapes's book, and establishes beyond reasonable doubt, if not to a moral certainty, that the documents on which Mapes staked her career are pathetic frauds.

This is where the report failed. The forgery is established to a moral certainty. The specific word spacing is a patented invention that did not exist until the 1980's. It's like finding a scroll written in Esperanto: it simply could not be older than a certain, fixed date.

Missing from this article is the FACT that Mapes spent the better part of 20 years trying to nail the TANG story on W and failed time after time. Her "truths" belong in the Jimmah Cahtah presidential museum.

In the immortal words of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan:
"You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts."

Every fact states that Bush was not given preferential treatment to get in; once in, he served honorably. The documents that state he didn't comply with orders were forgeries. Why does this woman go on, and on, and on? Does she believe people are that stupid that they will ignore the facts to join her hate crusade?

I don't think Rather was ever with NBC.

Poor little liberals. They're seething with rage. They're making things up. They're on the ropes and they know it, but they're so invested in their little narrative that reality simply can't be what it is. No. There are conspiracy theories involving voting and wars and terrorism. There are forgeries. There are endless stories and endless justifications for their pathetic delusions.

It will never end. The moonbats are crazy.

I haven't read the article, but I heard one commentator yesterday say that she mentions in the book that "F--- 'em" was her and Dan's rallying cry before some news broadcasts.
