BERLIN (AP) - New German Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed to strengthen relations with the United States and smaller EU nations in remarks released Sunday, a day before her top diplomat heads for Washington.

In an interview with Focus magazine, Merkel also suggested the close links with Russia pursued by her predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder, were a lower priority for the new government.

Looks like Merkel gets it. She does not want BRD to go the way of France.

Go Angela!

As always, have at it.

Gee, I don't hear much about the German Chancellor from the MSM anymore. That used to be the position of high moral leadership, and the most important thing was to work with our "allies" (meaning Germany and France because they opposed us). Now that important country is somehow less important.

Good for her. Get Sarkozy to replace Chirac, and maybe we'll be back in business with Old Europe again.

Just a few weeks ago- all of the MSM were downplaying this woman and the affect she will have.

Clearly, Merkel is no shrinking flower- she will have a positive affect on US and German relations

It's a lot to hope for but a "Frau Thatcher" would be a refreshing change for Europe

"It's a lot to hope for but a "Frau Thatcher" would be a refreshing change for Europe"

Being of Germanic descent, I am hoping just this.

That works too.

I'm trying to understand why we'd want to 'back in business' with 'Old Europe' again. Seriously. We've been shouldering the defence burden for socialist welfare states for far too long. It's time for them to stand on their own two feet - grow out of their their spoiled brat teenager attitude. Our resources are much better invested with those who share our values of freedom and liberty - and that's 'New Europe'.

By "back in business" I merely meant having better diplomatic relations with them. No way should we be looking to help them with their own defense, which I don't think we were doing with France in any event.

" ... smaller EU nations" -- that means the 'new' former Eastern Bloc nations, who are generally pro US, and who have previously been shunned by France and Germany.

You Go Girl!

Well France is France. They've always been very cynical in their relations - there's no news in that.

But Germany has turned out to be an extreme disappointment. I'd just as soon pack it up and move along.

Sorry, but i don't trust the krauts at this point. Schroeder used Bush as his whipping boy when it was convenient and he needed a boost in his poll ratings. Merkel may not be Schroeder, but she's cut from the same cloth.

IMO, this is not a cause for celebration. We do not need to be USED by these "Old Europeans".

And that would be a very safe assumption.

Germany has thousands of troops in Afghanistan. I'm thankful for that.

Precisely.

Countries like Bulgaria, Romania, and the "Stans" to name a few. Also, these countries are strategically located (from our point of view) to be a reminder to all the we have a significant Operational Reach.......
