While all the anti war cowards were screaming for Bush to cut and run and our willing accomplice main stream media acting like kids in a candy store. I heard someone on talk radio say that during the civil war Lincoln had his media detracters thrown in the bottom of a war ship until the war was over. But I can't find any facts on-line to back it up. Does any one know where I might go to find information on this? I mentioned this to a (left wing co-worker) and he thinks I made it up. I sure would like to prove him wrong! Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
Did your tour of Fort McHenry include the Hospital for Sick Patriotism?
Baltimore, Sept 13 -- The Provost Marshal arrested, in the morning, before daylight, the following distinguished citizens. Mayor Brown, Charles H Pitts, Lawrence Sangston, S. T. Wallis, T. P. Scott and Ross Winans members of the Legislature. F. K. Howard, the editor of the Baltimore Exchange, was also arrested. The whole party were conveyed to the Hospital for sick patriotism, located at Fort McHenry. (From the Philadelphia Public Ledger of September, 14, 1861)
gee, i wonder why???? (sarcasm button: ON!)

Really, here is proof the unionists started the murdering of civilians in Missouri and the seccesh response to it.
Union General Fremont issued orders that any male caught under arms in certain ares of the state was to be summarily executed. General Jeff Thompson then issued his own proclamation.

Volume III. 1881. (Vol. 3, Chap. 10)
Chapter X - Operations in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Indian Territory. May 10-Nov. 19, 1861.
HEADQUARTERS FIRST MILITARY DISTRICT, Mo. S. G.,
Camp Hunter, September 2, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Whereas Maj. Gen. John C. Fr6mont, commnnding the minions of
Abraham Lincoln in the State of Missouri, has seen fit to declare mar-
tial law throughout the whole State, and has threatened to shoot any
citizen soldier found in arms within certain limits; also to confiscate
the property and free the negroes belonging to the members of the Mis-
souri State Gnard:
Therefore know ye that I, M. JelL Thompson, brigadier-general of the
First Military District of Missouri, having not only the military authority
of brigadier-general, but certain police powers, granted by Acting Gov.
Thomas C. Reynolds, and confirmed afterwards by Governor Jackson,
do most solemnly promise that for every member of the Missouri State
Guard, or soldier of our allies, the armies of the Confederate States,
who shall be put to death in pursuance of this said order of General
Fr6mont, I will "hang, draw, and quarter" a minion of said Abraham
Lincoln.
While I am anxious that this unfortunate war shall be conducted, if
possible, upon the most liberal principles of civilized warfare, and every
order that I have issued has been with that object, yet, if this rule is to
be abandoned (it must first be done by our enemies), I intend to exceed
General Fr~mont in his excesses, and will make all tories that come
within my reach rue the day that a different policy was adopted by their
leader.
Already mills, barns, warehouses, and other private property has
been wastefully destroyed by the enemy in this district, while we have
taken notliing excel)t articles strictly contraband or absolutely neces-
sary. Should these things be repeated, I will retaliate tenfold, so hell)
me God!
M. JEFF. THOMPSON,
Brigadier- General
nothing said by the DAMNyankee coven on FR in defense of "mr. lincoln & his coven of thugs" has EVER justified what they UNdeniably DID.
SOME of the offenses of the lincoln administration were:
1. establishing CONCENTRATION (DEATH) CAMPS to confine their political opponents W/O trial,(NOTE: the first known use of the term CONCENTRATION CAMP was in a military re-port of a Prussian serving officer to his commanding general. he was describing in detail the MALtreatment of CSA POWS at Point Lookout DEATH CAMP!)
2.allowing torture, rapes & MASS MURDER of innocent unarmed civilians by the TENS of THOUSANDS (particularly the rapes/assaults/tortures/MURDERS of Asians,Blacks, Catholics,Indians,Jews,Latinos,"Mixed-bloods" (POTUS lincoln called mixed-bloods like ME for instance, "muddy coloured people")& the "poorest of the poor" whites.)
3. starving, denying medical care, clothing & shelter (and in THOUSANDS of cases, MURDERING POWs without cause!) to CSA POWs in their care.
FACT!

My post documented Lincoln's efforts to interrupt newspaper free speech, and that quote demonstrated it.
And this would be found in the non-existent "Annals of Old Missouri"?
Your absolutely absurd claim that "most newspaper deliveries" in the 1860s were made via US Mail. That is simply bizarre on its face.
Do you guys even bother to think a little when you read the CrownRights claptrap or do you accept it as Gospel as long as it bashes Lincoln and the Yankees?
loud rhetoric is not a substitute for FACTS & KNOWLEDGE!
can you PROVE he's WRONG??? i think NOT.

So the nice men in the white coats allowed you back at the keyboard again?
your academic preparation & degree(s) in history are???
inquiring minds want to know.

"Your absolutely absurd claim that 'most newspaper deliveries' in the 1860s were made via US Mail. That is simply bizarre on its face."
How do you arrive at that conclusion?
NO intelligent farmer intentionally mistreats his EXPENSIVE livestock, though a FEW fools MAY do so at times.
COMMON SENSE & LOGIC indicate that your position is faulty at BEST & intentionally deceptive at worst. furthermore that position is an example of the REVISIONIST PAP & ARROGANT self-righteous NONSENSE,out of the most extreme, LEFTIST, America-HATING, lunatic-fringe of the "poison ivy league" history departments.

his post is what passes for FACTS among the dixie haters, here on FR. NO FACTS, but rather a lot of SILLY NONSENSE & name-calling.
to ditto: LOL at you!

i'd also guess that they think that VOLUME of voice is a good substitute for IQ/education/facts/knowledge. (DAMNyankees, i've noted, tend to be LOUDMOUTHS!)

Memory sometimes fails. There had to be much Southern involvement in the international slave trade for it to work. And there was. Someone had to sell and buy the slaves once they got here. Southern merchants had no squeamishness about buying and selling slaves, or even owning slave ships.
Baltimore and Charleston were as involved in the illegal slave trade as any Northern port, except perhaps the largest, New York. In August 1858, the USS Dolphin captured the Echo, a New Orleans slaver, off the Cuban coast. The next month the suspected Charleston slaver Brothers was captured off Africa. South Carolina judges and courts did their best to see that the owners weren't convicted in either case.
The only thing that mattered to most of the New Englanders was commerce and greed, to hell with the United States. Odd, how little has changed as to the mindset for that section of America.
I guess that's what it all comes down too: the Confederacy wins a lot of sympathy from people who view it as victim or underdog, but neoconfederates are some of the most prejudiced, bigoted, vindictive, and stupid people in the country.
There aren't many Northerners who make a career out of maligning the South. Most have learned that our national failings weren't the fault of any one section, and no part of the country can claim to be wholly innocent of them. That's true of most Southerners as well, but there are Confederate sympathizers who just can't live without making remarks like yours.
If you have to run down another part of the country in such terms, it's a sign that your argument isn't especially strong. If you can't look at your own history on its own terms, but have to continually find someone else to point the finger out as worse -- rightly or wrongly -- it could be an indication that you don't know or don't want to know or can't defend that history.
And then you proceed to say:
I guess that's what it all comes down too: the Confederacy wins a lot of sympathy from people who view it as victim or underdog, but neoconfederates are some of the most prejudiced, bigoted, vindictive, and stupid people in the country.
Wow, talk about the pot calling the kettle black, for that category, you take the cake, you phony hypocrite.

Published academic book (well reviewed) on the history of banking before even finishing an MA; published two books on different subjects (including one touted in Barry Goldwater's biography) before finishing Ph.D.; was Economic History Association semi-finalist for best dissertaion on economic history (p.s., I never took an econ or busines class in my life);
published 20+ books on American history, and articles in prestigious Business History Review (Harvard); Civil War History; Historian; Pacific Historical Review; Western Historical Quarterly; Journal of Southern History; and Southern Studies;
Published an article in Journal of Economic History about the Dred Scott case and its impact on the Panic of 1857 that is probably the most frequently cited article EVER on the "Panic of 1857";
Frequent reviewer for Journal of American History, Journal of Economic History, Business History Review, and American Historical Review;
Directed and edited three encyclopedias of American history; served as expert referee on U.S. history on three separate National Endowment for the Humanities panels;
Taught U.S. history at 10-12th grade; then at four different U.S. universities, including Wisconsin and U. of Dayton;
Has published more on the Civil War than probably 99% of the posters on Free Republic.
I guess none of this counts because I happen to think history shows Lincoln was right.
And you betray your ignorance of slave records. All the evidence (Fogel's new "Without Consent or Contract," Huston's new "Calculating the Value of the Union," and many, many more works) show that slavery was about so much more than mere economics, and that if ONLY economics had been involved, you would be right---but sadly, slavery was also about race, power, and social class structure. Your argument is as senseless as asking how people could abuse their children. After all, they have an economic stake in keeping them healthy.
Also funny how no southern advocate ever wants to ask the slaves how they felt---oh, you can always concoct a masochist somewhere who says, "Massa, I's a love bein' a slave." But not in numbers. Ridiculous anecdotes like "oohhh, this slave actually warned the owners that the Yanks were comin'" is absolutely vacant.
