Abe Lincoln and the media

Posted on 11/26/2005 9:36:29 PM PST by Mier

While all the anti war cowards were screaming for Bush to cut and run and our willing accomplice main stream media acting like kids in a candy store. I heard someone on talk radio say that during the civil war Lincoln had his media detracters thrown in the bottom of a war ship until the war was over. But I can't find any facts on-line to back it up. Does any one know where I might go to find information on this? I mentioned this to a (left wing co-worker) and he thinks I made it up. I sure would like to prove him wrong! Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

I approve of the Lawrence Raid, because it was a military action. Women & Children weren't killed. If anything, it compares with your hero Sherman.

Unarmed civilian men and boys were. Had Sherman marched through Atlanta shooting every male rebel he saw then that would be an OK military action?

If my memory serves, there was never a slave runner from the south. There were slave owners in New England before there were in the south. It was also those same self righteous New Englanders from Boston and New Bedford whom got filthy rich off the slave trade by owning and captaining the slave ships that brought them over.

Several New England states threatened and tried to secede from the union during the war of 1812, many of them wanted to join Canada. More than one southern state used the same reasons for secession almost verbatim as MA had used a half century before. The New England traitors in the war of 1812 gave active aid to England and refused any of their troops to be used outside of their states. The only thing that mattered to most of the New Englanders was commerce and greed, to hell with the United States. Odd, how little has changed as to the mindset for that section of America.

These same holier than thou New England states again threatened secession when TX and LA were admitted to the union.

Aid and comfort to the enemy? That's one of the definitions of treason, isn't it? First amendment doesn't protect against criminal acts.

Criticized government officials and their supporters might try to claim that any criticism of their acts was aid and comfort to the enemy. Doesn't mean that it was.

Government officials aren't exempt from criticism except maybe in a country where free speech doesn't exist.

That seems to be the position of the current Republican administration and it's supporters. But be that as it may, you have to admit that we don't know what the newspaper published. Criticizm is one thing. Advocating active support of the rebellion would be another.

As a professional historian, I can tell you that the record is overwhelming that slaves were not treated well---even the ridiculous study by Fogel and Engerman that said they were fed as well as free white farmers was disproven.

But the essential element is not who treated their slaves well, but that slavery itself was an abomination and any government that continued to support that was itself in danger of being rent asunder. Every civilized country got rid of slavery . . . but the Confederacy went out of its way to SECURE property in slavery.

Moreover, have you ever heard of slave bells? These were absolutely common on any plantation, affixed to slaves so they could not run away. Check the court records of AL, LA, MS, or GA for the recurring issues of violence against slaves, some of which was against the law, but which was almost NEVER prosecuted and/or for which people were never convicted. That one Texas cattleman freed his slaves is nice, but is akin to a Japanese soldier on the "Death March of Bataan" saying, "I gave a GI a drink!"

Just went to Amazon and put your book on my wish list. Unfortunately I got the other book with a Human Events deal. Think I should chuck it? I wanted to use it to counter my kids' school left wing history propaganda. In their history books I notice that for every good thing about America, they counter it with something bad.

Abe Lincoln and the media

If there had only been an ABC miniseries about Abe Lincoln during his Presidency, maybe the South wouldn't have seceded.

What you say is captured perfectly in actual testimony of a runaway slave in Indiana, where the judge asked the slave the following questions:

"Were you fed well as a slave?"

(Slave) "Oh, yes. We had sweet taters and pork, and at Christmas massa killed a cow and we had beef and corn."

"Well, what were your living quarters like"

(Slave) "I had a nice little cabin with flowers on the window sill."

"Were you mistreated or beaten?"

(Slave) "Oh no! Me and massa best of friends. Hunted and fished together."

(Judge) "Well, I don't understand. Why did you run away?"

(Slave) "Well, yo' honor, the position is still open if you'd like to apply for it."

Reading about the former slave Sojourner Truth losing her children through sale should be enough don't you think? And she lived in the North.

why Good Morning, Mr Minister!

can you name even ONE legitimate historian who would defend the "facts" in the "Devil Knows How to Ride"? i think NOT!

"TDKHTR" is nothing more or less than INVENTED propaganda, which was specifically written as an APOLOGY for the worst depredations of the "freesoilers" (actually the murderous FILTH from KS, who made war on BOTH Unionists & Confederates from circa 1855-1865.) & FREEBOOTERS, like "doc jennison" & "COL jim lane", the "Kansas Volunteer Cavalry", the redlegs, & the jayhawkers.

but then, PROPAGANDA is the province of The Office of the DAMNyankee Minister of Propaganda, so i'd guess that's what we should expect from you/your office.

just thought you'd want to know that i have personally been into the dungeon at Ft McHenry (Baltimore,MD), where "mr. lincoln", the tyrant & war criminal, had his "enemies" from the press incarcerated with no bedding, little food & only enough water to keep them alive.

SOME of the PRINTERS/EDITORS/REPORTERS were kept in that "big hole in the ground" for 2 years, WITHOUT warrant, charges, indictments or even the pretense of a trial, according to the official US Army guide at Ft McHenry.

other members of the "Fourth Estate" were transferred to confinement at Point Lookout DEATH Camp, to Camp Douglas or to Elmira (HELLmira), NY for "preventive detention" and/or for punishment WITHOUT trial, until their death or the end of the war. (MANY perished at those DAMNyankee HELLholes of abuse, torture, intentional starvation, exposure to the weather & by denial of clothing/medical care! SOME members of the press were simply MURDERED, as it was easier & "more convenient" than confining them.)

That seems to be the position of the current Republican administration and it's supporters.

What are you, a frustrated Democrat or Democrat government official? Bush has stayed the course on the war and for that I applaud him and for that I voted for him. Feel free to criticize him on the war or whatever if you feel like it. I've certainly criticized his actions on various things. Bush is not Lincoln -- nowadays free speech is allowed.

In your post 86, you said, "Mere criticizm of the government should not be grounds for arrest". On that we agree (an historic moment).

But be that as it may, you have to admit that we don't know what the newspaper published. Criticizm is one thing. Advocating active support of the rebellion would be another.

The charges against the editor did not say active support for the war against the North, just secession arguments and criticism of the acts of government officials. A large minority of the country probably agreed with him about secession -- should they have all been arrested and thrown in prison? Have you ever criticized the acts of government officials? I take it that you don't feel you should be in jail because of that criticism.

SAYING that a person is a TRAITOR (absent proof) does NOT make them one.

face it, N-S, lincoln & his coven of thugs were NOT "in the right". there is not enough soap & water on earth to wash the innocent blood from the hands of the DAMNyankees.

we've discussed this numerous times.

does your state's Dept. of Corrections provide a pistol to "death row inmates" so that they can defend themselves from the warden/staff on the day they take their "last walk"????

the FILTH that were executed in the punitive raid on Lawrence were CRIMINALS, who received what they richly deserved.

free dixie,sw the "kill lists" listed each person by NAME, residence & indicated what crime they were being executed for.
