A seized 1996 Ford Thunderbird in good condition is a prize Roswell police hope will reduce gun violence in the city.
Police are giving residents until Jan. 2 to turn in a working, unloaded gun to police headquarters to get a raffle ticket for the car, which was seized during a drug bust.
The drawing is Jan. 4.
Aside from reducing violence, police are also hoping to reduce the danger from New Years Eve celebrations, where many fire their guns into the air. Those shots can come back with enough force to injure or kill people.
A similar raffle six years ago didnt have much success, but police are hoping for a better turnout this year.

LOL! In that town, "alien" means only one thing... and it doesn't speak Spanish.

Try sweetening the pot: Turn in your gun and get a free ride on a UFO. Or better yet, a free UFO. This is Roswell after all.

It would be the height in irony if someone turned in a broken old useless gun, won the car, and then immediately got involved in a hit-and-run with it.

Must be related to the story about Bush starting war with space aliens and they just dont want Roswell to shoot the wrong little green men.

Is it the same NINETEEN-NINETY-SIX T-Bird they are giving a way? Criminals wouldn't want that junk!
How about offering to raffle off a couple of pounds of cocaine that was seized in a drug bust? And take their guns and arrest everyone who shows up to get a raffle ticket?

Why don't they quit beating around the bush and pass a ban on handguns like SF did?

If they want to cut down on crime, they should sell the T-Bird, use the money to buy guns, and hand them out to solid citizens.
