Steele banking on Bush visit
But presidential tie seen by some as a liability

President Bush's approval ratings have hit an all-time low in Maryland, but Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, a candidate for U.S. Senate, is betting that Bush still has cachet with the state's most dedicated Republican donors.

The president will headline his first fundraiser for Steele on Wednesday at M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens. Tickets to the lunch, for which business attire is required, range from $125 for general admission to $5,000 for a photo opportunity with Bush.

The event marks the second Steele fundraiser to feature a major administration official. Presidential adviser Karl Rove hosted a closed-door July event for him in Washington that netted about $75,000.

Steele is playing catch-up in the money game. U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, a leading Democratic candidate for the Senate, has $1.8 million on hand. Steele has about $350,000 on hand, according to his most recent campaign filings.

Oren Shur, a spokesman for Cardin, said he doesn't believe Maryland voters will be swayed by the president's appearance.

"President Bush is coming to town to tell Marylanders why Michael Steele is his choice to advance the Bush administration's agenda in the U.S. Senate," Shur said.

Alvicar said the Democratic candidates for Senate - which also include former congressman Kweisi Mfume, American University professor Allan Lichtman and Lise Van Susteren, a forensic psychologist - are bound to accept help from their party leaders.

"How many fundraisers do you imagine Cardin or anyone else will have with national figures in the Democratic Party?" Alcivar said.

I haven't seen the polls, but I doubt that Maryland blacks will support "Uncle Tom". I'm starting to get a queasy feeling next year's Senate races. I hope our guys can at least hold the fort.

Don't waste your money - I looked seriously at the Steele campaign and he isn't running to win.

Did Schumer show you Steele's credit report or something?

The College Professor has made all of three comments here in his/her brief stay, and one of them is obviously anti Liberal, so I doubt he/she is a Troll

He is a good man. I'm in Pa., but I've sent him a small check. He's already proven he can win statewide.

Another thing, there is at least anecdotal evidence that the black vote could help him.

Well, the poster is flat-out wrong. I've heard nothing but positive news from Steele, after filtering through the MSM and Dem hypocrisy first.

Steele is a good man who has been treated terribly by the so called Tolerant Left. He has been called an "Uncle Tom" by State Representatives, he has had Oreo Cookies thrown at him by the Tolerant Left. Chuck Schumer's Staff illegally obtained his credit report in an effort to see if they could smear him.... Have you heard any of this in the National News?

ColProf is probably Tom Schaller who routinely gets his ass handed to him on Chip Franklin and Ron Smith's shows on WBAL.

I agree, The Poster knows little about Steele or he wouldn't have made such an idiotic statement

LOL, Between the Md4Bush debacle here on FR and Schumer's Staff illegally obtaining Steele's Credit report, Dems here in Maryland seem to think Steele is formidable enough to jeopardize their freedom by breaking the law in an effort to prevent him from becoming our next Senator from Maryland

Don't forget that Steele's campaign office in Annapolis was burglarized and laptops were stolen.

This race is shaping up to be a barn-burner. What do the Democrats think he's been doing for the last four years? He's been to virtually every church dinner, fair, etc. The folks who don't know who Steele is are never going to vote for him anyway.

Not to mention he can go on the air every other Saturday on WBAL while the Sun is completely shut out. Now Democrats are scrambling to get air time just in case it matters.

That Bob Ehrlich is a genius.

I met Bob Ehrlich when he was running for the State Legislature while at a Gun Show at the Howard County Fairgrounds, he is younger than me and he seemed like a kid, but I liked the fact that he actually spent time to answer the questions I had for him. He came off as a straight shooter, and I've followed him since. I live in Frederick County so I couldn't vote for him, Roscoe Bartlett is my Representative.

I knew little about Michael Steele until he ran for LT. Gov in Md. But after his speech at the GOP Convention, I knew he was going places. I believe he will be our next Senator

Actually I've consulted for three successful GOP senate campaigns and 2 unsuccessful ones. And I've lurked since 1998. But don't let the facts get in the way.

Steele is blowing off seriously important fundraising sources, refusing to speak at key events, and conserving his pathetic war chest like a pauper.

He may be prepared to run against Mfume, but who isn't? He won't stand a chance against Cardin or O'Malley. He has about three months before it's too late to get serious - I would like it if he did, but it just won't happen... he has bad handlers. Look for a repeat of the last IL senate race.

It's interesting that a Republican from Maryland, a Democrat state, would ask for the President's help. Hasn't he spoken to Forrester who claims Bush lost his election? LOL

He's about the only Republican I'm helping get elected to the Senate. I'm that disgusted with the majority of them.
