The Crusades Remembered

(AINA) -- History Channel (India) and History Channel (Australia) recently telecast a two-part documentary titled 'The Crusades: the Crescent and the Cross' based on the history of first three and major Crusades (1096-1099, 1144-1148, and 1189-1193 AD) out of eight undertaken in the Middle Ages to reclaim Jerusalem for Christendom. Today it has become imperative for the West to remember the Crusades more than the World War II. A reinvented Fascism and Nazism are unlikely to present a threat to West; but radical Islam is almost sure to do that. From 9/11 and London explosions to recent New Delhi triple blasts and attempted conspiracy to blow up nuclear reactor plant in Sydney Jihad is proving to be the fastest growing global Inc.

History Channel US is just as guilty of altering the history of past struggles between Christians and Muslims.

I never saw such a biased presentation in my life... it was disgusting. I wish I knew who's money is behind it.

I was not too impressed by it either. Christian atrocities were dwelt on, Muslim atrocities were hurredly glossed over. The lack of outrage from CAIR over this documentary is a very good indicator.

Having no cable, I was unable to watch this program. However, it is historically inaccurate to discuss the Crusades except in context of the entire history of the conflict between Islam and Christianity and its successor the West.

Islam was generally on the offensive from its inception to 1100, conquering a very large proportion of the historically Christian lands.

For a coupls of centuries after 1100 the Crusades attempted an eventually unsuccessful attempt to regain a very small portion of these lands.

From about 1300 to 1500, Islam generally gained ground against Christendom.

From 1500 till recently, Islam has generally been receding in political competitiveness, to the point that today its continued existence rests not on its own power but merely on its opponents' unwillingness to be "mean."

Change above post to:

"From about 1300 to 1650, Islam generally gained ground against Christendom."

Why The History Channel can't televise a realistic portrayal of
The REAL First Crusade (the Jihad started in the 600s)...
It would have to be rated "XXX" for sex and violence.

A Concise History of the Crusades by Thomas Madden is a nice introduction. It is, as the title suggests, concise, at right about two hundred pages. Madden gives a good, balanced approach to the Crusades, dismantling many of the inaccurate portrayls foisted on the public by journalists and Hollywood (such as the silly idea that Jerusalem's streets were 'knee-deep' in blood after the Crusaders seized it).

The Crusaders were hardly saints, by and large, in their conduct, but neither were the horrid destroyers of Muslim culture and lands as they are often portrayed. In fact, they were very benign conquerors. The Crusader Kingdoms continued to be populated by the same Muslims and Greek Orthodox Christians who had lived there for centuries. Once the Crusaders were driven out, Islam pretty much forgot about them. The Eastern Church did not, but that is another story... At any rate, there was hardly any rage or hatred over the Crusades until the twentieth century- after all, the Muslims won! Hardly something to get upset about. And the Crusaders were NOT imperialists like later-day Europeans. They came to a very specific place with a very specific purpose, and it was not to get rich- for most Crusaders.

...out of eight undertaken in the Middle Ages to reclaim Jerusalem for Christendom...

There were nine Crusades undertaken to reclaim Jerusalem, unless they're not counting the Fourth Crusade which didn't make it past the plundering of Constantinople, but if they don't count the Fourth Crusade then they shouldn't count the Eighth Crusade either, which ended up in Tunisia..

Maybe they're combining the 5th/6th or the 8th/9th.

great links for Crusades and medieval history

Hefty but full of comprehansive and well researched info about much more than the military aspect of the Crusades. Not sure how objective but the author at least had strong objections to "Kingdom of Heaven" saying it was very inaccurate. This work has input from several historians.
Lots of color plates of art from the period, maps etc.

Of course...the world hsa probably never seen the likes of violence and bloodthirsty butchery as the Muslim expansion is the early years.

Not much better today.

Point well taken. The fourth crusade was certainly a disaster...an attack on fellow Christians with no precedent... An attack which forever weakened the ability and resolve of Byzantium to absorb the shocks of the Islamic hordes.

Crusades ping.

This chunk of history has been re-written so many times it's hard to
tell the players apart without a program. I'd be happy to clarify but it hardly seems needful.
