Commercials Targeting Snowe and Collins on Alito Vote a Waste
The Kennebec Journal ^ | November 26, 2005

Posted on 11/26/2005 8:57:27 AM PST by new yorker 77

Senate hearings on the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U. S. Supreme Court will not begin until Jan. 9, but the campaign both for and against him has already begun in Maine.

Television ads from interest groups are being shown in this state.

The targets are Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, two moderate Republicans who cannot be counted on as automatic votes either in support of or opposed to Alito.

The commercials are designed to persuade Mainers to pressure the senators to sway their votes.

Conservative organizations are paying for ads supporting Judge Alito's nomination. Groups concerned that the judge might vote to limit abortion rights are paying for ads opposing him.

The ads are probably a waste of money.

We doubt that either of our senators will be swayed by commercials or moved by pressure on either sides. Both say they will consider what Judge Alito says at the confirmation hearings and then decide how to vote.

That's the way this decision should be made.

This decision is far too important to be based on who has the best television commercials.

It's a guarantee they'll vote however their Democrat masters tell them.

Collins and Snowe's votes are meaningless on this.

We all know the only way for the dems to block Alito is through fillabuster.

THere are only 4 republicans chafee, snowe, specter, collins who would vote against alito.

That would give the gop 51 votes and alito would be confirmed even if they all voted against alito.

The only way the dems win is to fillabuster Alito. The commercials should be targeting senators like hagel, specter, and murkowski for the nuclear option. There are five solid rino no votes for the nuclear option. Mccain, chafee, snowe, collins, and warner.

Collins and Snowe are against the nuclear option. The only way the dems can win is from fillabuster. So targeting them is a waste of money.

If Alito is a shoo-in, they will both vote to confirm. If he isn't then who knows? In any case, we shouldn't need them, though.

Snowe needs to go. I urge all conservatives in Maine to get active in getting her off of the ballot for reelection. If we can't ditch her in the primaries write in Anita Conservative during the general elections.

I doubt McCain would vote to block the nuke option on Alito. He saw what conservatives did with Miers. He knows that conservatives would turn from just not liking him to actively hating him. He wouldn't have a prayer at the nomination and he knows he can't win as an independent without being a billionaire.

Probably not. If we write in a protest in enough numbers to be reported we can at least let everyone know that we aren't pleased. This message needs to go out to the Republican Party in Maine more than the to the liberals. A large number of the Republicans up here aren't listening to their conservative base.

Don't think Olympia had a conservative base.
Can the Conservative base in Me. put up a candidate and beat Snowe? Highly unlikely. Unfortunately, Maine is a blue State.

McCain has already said he would never vote for the nuclear option. His reasoning is that vermont and california have the same number of senators so you have to give minorities the same rights.

McCain also says that if you use the nuclear option for judges next will be legislation. That is a lie. No one has said they would do it for legislation. In fact senators like Orrin Hatch said they would never do it for legislation.

McCain was on Hannity and colmes few weeks back after Alito was picked saying he wouldn't vote for the nuclear option.

In addition to the RINO label, we need to start calling these senators "Hermaphrodite Republicans." They are neither one nor the other, consisting of a little bit of both parties.

Amen. Most of her support comes from the southern part of the state and a few in charge of the party elsewhere. A lot of individuals who work very hard for the party are oblivious to just what groups Snowe usually voices support for.

Just giving up on us being a Blue State is never going to help anything. A lot of us are changing minds one liberal at a time.

Well, if he said it, he said it. Thanks for the info. How does this guy begin to think he has any shot at the nomination? I thought that many states have, since 2000, changed their laws to keep independents out of primaries. That should kill McCain's chances.

"How does this guy begin to think he has any shot at the nomination?"

He's already campaigning. He was on Fox News yesterday morning sounding more hawkish and patriotic than George Bush.

I've seen him in obvious campaign-mode too. I just can't figure out who he thinks his base is going to be in the primaries. I would put him in the same group as people like Rudy or Condi. It would be much, much easier for any of them to win a general election than to win the nomination.

If we can win a conservative I'm all for it. Have you heard from the campaign for NRSC yet? They have Snowe slated as one they would like to replace. They said they would like to see a conservative in the seat. She was listed as well as Clinton and a few others.

Re your #6 -

As much as I hate to, I have to admit...

That you're probably right about our "Queen of Infanticide", Sen. Snowe.

She essentially OWNS the Republican Party up here, and I get the impression that no one other than her personally picked and annointed candidates even get to run as a Republican in any national / Congressional elections.

And anyone silly enough to challenge that system will be summarily hung out to dry by their own party.
Seen it happen.

That's just the way, as near as I can tell, that it's done up here in Maine, and has been for as long as I've lived here.
