When U.S. soldiers need to penetrate a tank's armor from a mile away, they count on a weapon that evolved from the garage tinkering of a former wedding photographer.

Bullsh*t! A 50 cal is as useless against a tank a 100 yards as a spitwad, much less a mile.

"I don't understand what good a .50-caliber is going to do you," King said. "I don't understand any civilian use of it. The only thing it's good for is for military or police application. You can't really hunt with it because it would destroy most of the meat."

It's obvious not only do you not understand what good a .50 cal is, but you don't understand the Constitution either! The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with HUNTING...try reading it sometime.

But the powerful gun has drawn plenty of critics, who say the rifle could be used by terrorists to bring down commercial airliners

as can a Canadian goose.time to ban them.

"They're (.50 caliber) easier to buy than a handgun," Diaz said.

Yeah, 5ft+ long, and cost more than 3k. Much easier to buy & conceal, too. What an idiot.

Joseph King, a terrorism expert at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, said terrorists could use the weapon to take out a plane.

So, in effect, what he's saying is a .50 cal is as lethal as some boxcutters?

The New York City Police Department recently announced it's training officers in its aviation unit to use the rifles, which will be on board some of the department's helicopters to intercept potential attacks from boats or airplanes

That ought to be funny to watch. Who develops their tactics, Jean Claude Van Damme or Sylvester Stallone?

...critics, who say the rifle could be used by terrorists to bring down commercial airliners

It's obvious that these critics do not have any understanding about the resolving of the target solution in an air defense problem. IOW's, when the bullet gets to where the the aircraft was when the shooter shot, the aircraft will not be there. The aircraft has moved on, unharmed and will continue to do so.

"made their way to terrorists, drug cartels and survivalists."

Equating "survivalist" with terrorist and drug cartels!
I'm surprised they forgot to throw in "Militia's".

For the record, "Survivalist" and legitimate "Militia" are honorable and necessary components of the U.S. citizenry.

This supposed article seems very familiar, I think it's mostly written by the anti's, and regurgitated every few month's.

It would be fascinating to see a first draft of this story before the editors got hold of it. Somehow, I suspect this started out as a profile of Barrett and his rifles, but became aa bigger anti-gun screed with each revision.

Utter stupidity.

"Joseph King, a terrorism expert at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, said terrorists could use the weapon to take out a plane."

Really...they why did the P-51 and F-86 have 6 .50 BMG guns and the P-47 8 if all you needed was one round?

Earlier in the article we had:

"But the powerful gun has drawn plenty of critics, who say the rifle could be used by terrorists to bring down commercial airliners or penetrate rail cars and storage plants holding hazardous materials."

A few years back a rather tipsy individual shot a hole in the trans Alaska pipeline with a plain old .338. Any of the big game rounds (.375 .458 not to mention the Weatherby speedsters such as the .378 and .460) This is just another anti-gun lunatic fringe group out to ban all guns a little at a time.
